What if professional athletes were paid based on a combination of their individual and team performances over a season, instead of having salaries?

There would be a mininum based salary and then a player would have to earn more over a season. So Stephen Curry would be earning the most right now, and his teammates would get a boost in pay from being 22-0.

The disparity between owners who want to win and those who want to simply be profitable would become apparent.

Most contracts all have incentives like "winning X amount of games" "making all-star team" "playoffs" "championship", and all get bonuses due to hitting these marks.

Jordan was paid $8k every single time he dunked, this was in his Bulls contract, not Nike's!

Damn, Steph and Harden are both getting paid peanuts.

I didn't know that!

So yeah they have bonuses now, but I'm talking about making it a fundamental part of their pay instead of handing out huge contracts to aging superstars who might suffer a major injury. Or just guys who don't pan out.

And then you have someone like Curry who has to wait to get paid. As a fan, I would like that better. But then you might have teammates fighting over stats on crappy teams. But then again, maybe the players would be more averse to tanking.

Probably say Carroll is a bit overrated and we the Raps have great value for Lowry. DeRozan's contract is about right. Joseph should be a steal if he continues to develop well by years 3 and 4. Verdict is still out on Jonas. Ross is awful.

Do you think the Raptors will become legitimate contenders?

Without superstar talent, no they can't. This team as constructed is good enough to make the playoffs and perhaps win a round, but everything else is a blur.

They need a number of talented pieces and maybe a better coach, although Casey has been good to start this year. They revert too many times to ISO situations in the 4th. Need to actually move the ball more, they were doing that earlier in the year.
