I love Stephen King books but always felt like this series was a daunting task to undertake so I never read them. Story seemed too out there for me to commit to 7 books or whatever it was.
For those who have, what do you think of this casting choice?
Idris Elba vs Matt McConaughey. Seems intriguing

I don't really like either for the role. I'm sure that either one of them could do well with it but neither screams 'Roland' to me.

Nah McCon is supposed to play the antagonist who I know the character of from reading The Stand.
The Walking Dude. Randall Flagg.

Oh, my bad, misinterpreted the OP and skimmed the article. :oldlol:
I feel better about McConaughey as Flagg. I think that Christian Bale could kill it as Roland, don't think I've ever not liked him in a movie.

Nah that was my fault on the OP. Kinda misleading.
Either way, I'm interested in this project.

First 4 books are awesome. Next 3 he pumped out to get them done and the quality suffers. Also has the usual issue of King not being all that great at writing endings. Still, it's a very good series overall.
Anyway, I like Elba, although I always saw Roland being played by an older actor, but Elba usually nails every role he takes, so I wouldn't be upset at all.

Mlh1981 needs to stop by this thread lol.
LOVE these books man the scene with gunslinger meeting the man in black and having that discussion by the fire had to be among the most powerful poignant exchanges ever!

Maybe I'll check them out one day, heard they're great but the tone seems risky to invest in.
Randall Flagg is a great character. Reading the descriptions and details reminds me of some Frank Herbert or something and Dune didn't really keep my interest
Im in.. Can't picture MM as Randall tho..

I'd say it's much more accessible than Dune and certainly less moving parts in who's/what's involved.
The first book itself is quite short, only a couple hundred pages, so it's not gonna take a huge investment to read that and decide if the series is for you.
The rest from there range from 400-800 pages, so they take a bit more time, but I reckon if you like the first couple of books then you'll buzz through them all. Part 4 (Wizard and Glass) is a flashback to when Roland is a teenager, so it's not hugely essential to the overarching plot, but provides plenty of insight into the character of Roland and why he is like he is. I'd definitely read if if you get into it.

Thanks.
Yea I should just track down the first one and not feel forced to read the whole series and just take it one at a time instead of take the whole series as a singular entity until I'm a fan and enjoy it until I don't , if I don't.
Dunno why I always viewed the series the way I have. The way you put it seems so simple lol

A black English man playing a white western cowboy?
I swear, these studios are beginning to cast black actors as white characters just for the sake of it.

Brothas bring a certain natural flair, sex appeal, a je ne sais quoi that our paler, pastier brethren lack.
Hollywood is just now coming around to this fact.
I mean look at THIS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwEYIjhZNnY), Christian Bale as talented (and overrated) as he is could never illicit that response from women. NEVER.

Roland as a character is literally the antithesis of sex appeal.

Idris is hot, but he's no Clint Eastwood or Harrison Ford.

Idris Elba gets overrated because he is black.

Christian Bale is only an A lister if you're talking about the independent movie scene. The Nolan Batman movies would have been just as successful with many other actors in Christian Bale's place.
Really, those are facts.
I don't pay to see movie with black leads and so I surely will not be paying to see this. To be fair, I probably wouldn't go see this regardless of who gets cast.

Roland should be white...as he is in the books. It has nothing to do with being racist either...I hate when they change the race of any characters like this...especially iconic ones.

Haven't read the books, but just popped in to say that Luther is a garbage TV show and most of the praise that Elba gets comes from white guilt

Such a strange group of books to try bringing to film, but I hope they pull it off regardless of casting.

The next Hitler movie should feature a black actor too.

it'll be a 150 mil production - they won't put a C-tier negro actor into the main role, especially since the main character's whiteness plays the role in the story (Detta)

Why not? I mean we have white ppl in movies about Egypt, and a movie called "the last samurai" starring Tom f*cking Cruise. Can't wait until they star an Asian guy to play Elvis in a biopic :applause:
