Maybe the most must-watch fight in UFC history

Yes, dude. It's a p4p GOAT candidate vs. the most exciting fighter inside and outside of the octagon, in his physical prime, coming off multiple knock out finishes.

It's a must watch. It just is.

McGregor Aldo is Magic/Bird, Oklahoma/Texas, Duke/UNC, Yankees/Red Sox, etc

A rivalry that transcends the sport

This is insane, I have butterflies. This is a big night.

McGregor has the gift of gab which has made him a rich man... something even the best MMA fighters oftentimes don't achieve.

It is not too often where the biggest talker also happens to be the best fighter in combat sports. I'd be sort of surprised if McGregor was able to knockout Aldo (the only way he wins the fight, imo).

I'd guess Aldo by submission if I were pushed to make a prediction.

If the 1st round was 10-8 then the last one was 10-8

How was the last round a 10-8? Souza landed some punches, take down and did a tiny bit of damage on the ground and nothing else. Romero had Souza in dreamland after the first. Big difference.

Statistically

Jacare completely controlled him on the ground

Romero was swinging for the fences, he hit a few times but it was the shot that dropped him that did the most

I'm also going to say this... I think MMA fighters in general have begun focusing a little too much on other disciplines and neglected basic boxing principles. There are just certain things that you should know not to do when standing and throwing. Aldo broke about every rule in 10 seconds tonight.

We saw it with Rousey, but I expect a little more out of actual talented fighters.

He was getting hammer fisted to the nose without putting his hands up

Conor knocked the little Brazilian monkey out with one left hook to chin. Left the dudes career in shambles and forced him to cry in front of millions

Aldo will never recover. This will haunt him for the rest of his life

blacknapalm
12-13-2015, 02:09 AM
Not fixed. Aldo was knocked out cold after letting his hands go and not even making an attempt to protect his chin.

That was very simple counter-punching.

you so get it and it's what made conor so dangerous since he's first gotten into ufc. he's become such a better counter puncher, almost to the point he's relying on it. he can crank up that left hand at any point.

...and i picked aldo to win this. i am disappointed the fight ended so early. still think conor is prone to major leg kicks which aldo can dish out.

want to see the rematch but conor gets so much credit. i'm down for edgar vs. conor. aldo gets the winner.

mcgregor is learning how to use his major reach size to deal out some serious boxing. if he does it it in a counter point of way....outside of wrestling, there's not much you can do. he's already taken out mendes. weight cutting will be difficult for him but damn, his striking is now elite.

aldo fought so weird tonight though. his normal footwork seemed so off, but then again, the fight was just about over before i knew it. i think conor swarmed him and aldo lost all composure...at least that's what i saw from first perspective. we can over-analyze this either way. aldo showed poor mechanics, conor executed a great counter and finishe

My brother was a Division I-A wrestler and I have a great amount of respect for the sport. As you know, a lot of former collegiate wrestlers "go professional" by entering the Octagon.

I've been watching the UFC since its inception. I like MMA a lot, though not quite as much as boxing.

But, come on man... that was bad. And it has happened twice in a row on huge UFC venues now. The sport will self-correct and guys will become better at not leaving their chins wagging out there. But I'm going to point it out when it happens, especially one that egregious.

That's kind of the truth but to be fair all of their "other actual sports" don't have legit professional leagues. Even if there were professional organizations for them, they're probably making WNBA-level salaries, so the UFC is a good place for a lot of these combat fighters.

I get what you're saying but I'm not sure that any of that should equate to crying, at least for me. It's very difficult to place yourself in the position of a fighter in a situation like that but I think that I'd feel intense anger over anything else if I lost in that kind of a fashion, and speaking just for myself, anger doesn't equate to tears.

Anger usually always manifests into crying. It's just human nature. It's also completely expected in a case like this. Aldo has given his life to MMA, and he just got embarrassed in the biggest fight of his career. He's had one storied life in MMA, but lbh that one-punch knockout is gonna be the replay that unfortunately defines his career (barring a rematch victory of course).

I was completely blown away. In retrospect it totally makes sense; it was pisspoor decision making and amateur boxing from Aldo; but in plain sight it was a heart-stopping shocker.

And yet he was UFC HW World champion after like 2 professional fights.

boxers are probably the lowest iq athletes in the world and most of them do not excel at other sports. hell at least half of mma fighters went to college, like 95% of boxers dont even have a GED :lol

2 words: mayweather reading

talk about failures in life prior to the sport....:coleman:

Floyd made $220 million for one fight this year. That's like the combined lifetime earnings of all MMA fighters who've ever lived multiplied by 10. :lol

No one has ever failed at a sport and then just walked in to a Boxing ring and became World champion in a handful of fights. And it will never happen.

Because it's a brutal sport that really doesn't require as much skill. You can say the same for the NFL in a way, but the goal is way simpler in the UFC. Smash your opponent to bits.

MMA is still in its infancy. Most guys who have been 'elite' the past decade+ started out in other sports/disciplines and got into MMA later in life. I think it will take a generation, when kids who study MMA from an early age come of age and start competing. Then maybe we will see more Mayweatheresque fighters who have known nothing in their lives but MMA from the crib... and less Kimbo Slices and Brock Lesnars.

My point exactly. MMA now is like basketball in the 50s and 60s. Or Boxing in the late 1800s-early 1900s.

People still figuring it out, still in its infancy, not yet highly specialized. It's something people pick up in their 20s or even 30s (ala Heather Holm) when they've run out of rope for whatever sport they were doing before runs out.

There are 6 and 7 year olds right now training in nothing but MMA who might take the sport to levels 15-20 years from now where novices won't be able to even dream of competing with them. But that time is clearly not now.

the kardashians have made 100's of millions because of the money in marketable media too :coleman:

brock was i think a d1 college wrestler btw. there has never been a mma champ without some fighting background. boxing fans are way too pretentious with 'the art of boxing' when its always been something that can be learned on the streets. mma actually takes a LOT more learned moves and there is WAY more variation to the point you need instructors at least.

Was an elite college wrestler which is perfect for getting into MMA. Yet he got into an NFL training camp knowing fukc all about football :lol

Not really impressive with guys like Jimmy Graham and Antonio Gates out there, who made it far past training camp knowing jack shit about the game (obviously Lesnar's athleticism is impressive regardless)

Floyd became the highest paid athlete in Sports because of his skills first and foremost. He had been Boxing since before he learned how to walk.

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=12705338

If he had picked up Boxing when he was 25 after failing as an NBA player and tried to compete as a pro boxer, he would've been obliterated. But his father and uncle were World champions and contenders who taught him from the crib until he retired recently. From the time he was an infant until he turned professional, all he did was box. Years of training, dozens of amateur fights, Olympic experience before his first pro fight.

MMA is FAR from that point. Maybe Joe-Zay and McGregor's children will reach that level. We'll just have to wait and see.

Typical boxing vs MMA bullshit in here.

Dadda with horrible posts as usual, probably just trying to stir the pot.

He acts as if a guy like Valuev didn't just stroll in and hold a major boxing title after being a failed athlete in other sports. We're actually going to sit here and pretend that Brock is a bad athlete? He'd beat the shit out of 99.9% of the world.

Jon Jones, McGregor, Brock, Silva, etc... All some top tier, 1% level athletes.

not to mention, MMA is a multiple-discipline sport that would be very unusual to train a young kid in, anyway. the idea that you would have a young kid training for many hours a day with 3-4 different coaches is pretty far-fetched. who's going to be able to afford and sacrifice that outside of a kung-fu movie?

grappling is just fine as a base IMO. the child can then expand on that as they grow up.

the idea that MMA is still in its infancy doesn't make much sense to me, but that doesn't mean it can't grow and improve. then again that's true of all sports...

Valuev had 43 professional fights before he got a shot at a world title.

Now take all those guys you named at the age they started competing in MMA and have them compete in Boxing or any other major sport and see what happens (We already know Brock couldn't cut it in the NFL). Can you imagine anyone becoming MVP of the NBA after picking up the sport at 33 ala Holly Holm?

You guys are witnessing the infancy stage of MMA. This is the equivalent of the 50s-60s NBA.

Does organized MMA even exist at the amateur level? What's the equivalent of the Golden Gloves or AAU?

It will take a generation to weed out the fly-by-night, failed NFLers and backyard BBQ brawlers who become instant stars.

It is in earlier stages, but what you fail to understand is, it brings in combat sports that aren't. It allows average to good boxers to combine with other skills that they may be more suited to but never knew about.

Boxers come in and can do well? Of course they can... the sport is about hitting other people. Both are.
Wrestlers were dominating for a while. Now strikers are having their go.

I'm not even sure what point you are getting at...
The sport is full of great fighters. That is undeniable.

I was going for McGregor, but it is a load of shit that he was "in his head". Dude just got hit with a shot and it happened to be good enough. I feel bad for Aldo. Wanna see them fight again, and Aldo get some shots in and test him.

McGregor is probably my favourite fighter at the moment, but I want to see him tested, and Aldo can do that.

This was so anti climatic like many ufc fights that get hyped to the heavens. The Irish crowd had he really pumped for this fight. And then the champ gets dropped like a bag of sheit from one punch. A straight left and dude was out cold lol

The Rousey fight was better than this
