View Full Version : Donating plasma for $$$

I donated plasma for the first time yesterday and received $50! Here's how the payout structure works at the donation center in Lewiston, Maine.
First 5 appointments - $50 each
After that it's $25 for first donation of the week and $35 for your second. The max number of times you can donate is 2X in a 7 day period. Each donation takes about an hour.
So you can start off making $100 per week and then it will drop to $60 as long as you go twice. And of course you're saving lives in the process, not bad!

Anyone here donate plasma?

I've thought about it but have never done it. My worry is that I won't feel well afterwards. And if I have a needle in my arm twice a week I'm gonna have track marks and a sore arm 24-7 like a fuggin addict.
How do you feel afterwards?

I felt fine afterwards. As long as you eat a good meal and drink plenty of water before the donation you should be good.
I have gotten lightheaded before donating whole blood but that was one of my first experiences. For the plasma donation they take our your blood, separate the plasma and then send the rest of the blood back into your system. So they are taking "less" from your body.
And I'm not sure how often I'm going to go. I don't like the idea of getting stuck with a needle twice a week but I'm going to at least go 5x and get the $250

Actually it is. Plasma is needed to save lives and there is no substitute for it. The companies are able to sell the plasma for a lot of money so the donors should get something for their time.

i've donated and had blood drawn many times. they took such a minor amount that i never had any troubles afterwards.
even when they were filling like ten different big sample tubes with my precious red stuff and i thought i was a dying robin hood, it was still no big deal.
I'm a pussi when it comes to needles. Can't even take shots or do blood tests.

A friend of mine told me he did a clinical trial where they paid him $4,000 for like 2 weeks. They use healthy volunteers to test out the effects of drugs for certain illnesses. The drug he tested was already FDA approved and he spent the whole time in a comfortable room w/ cable TV, internet connection, 3 meals a day.
Hell of a hustle. Think it was through Pfizer or some other huge drug conglomerate.

The donors get paid for their time.
During that time they donate their plasma..
I guess you could consider it a business transaction

How do they extract the plasma from you?
The process is very similar to donating blood, specifically double red cells.
A needle goes into your vein, extracting your blood. You are hooked up to a machine. The machine separates the plasma from your blood. The plasma goes into a container hanging from the machine and the rest of your blood goes back into you. It takes a few cycles to fill up the container with the plasma. So your blood is taken out, you wait a little while the plasma is separated and then they take more blood and separate the plasma, etc. You don't really feel anything during the whole process, just a minor sensation by the needle.
And your body naturally replenishes the lost plasma within 24-48 hours.

I donate Plasma a ton, there's a center literally just a minute from my apartment. While I enjoy it, I notice that I have a lot more energy and perform much better physically when I go stretches without donating. Once, I donated in the morning and then went to go play some frisbee, I felt horrible while I played and then eventually blacked out, not good results. However, there is real money if you can get your friends to do it; for each friend you bring, you get $50-$100, so you've got to work that aspect of it all. Also in order to donate, you can't have AIDS, so that rules out a good chunk of you

Sometimes it makes you feel like absolute shit.
But if you need the money, it's something pretty much anyone can do.

Why do you need the extra money so bad? Drive uber instead.
I have a friend like you, always wheelin' and dealin' trying to get the cheapest price on everything even if it takes three times as long. Sometimes it works but other times it's just a pain in the ass.

Like I said, I'm only for sure going to do it the 5 times for the $250. And there are worse things to be doing than saving lives and earning a little extra money while doing so. People can die when there is a shortage of plasma, which happens quite often.

Blood is extracted into a machine that separates the blood and plasma.
I personally donated, but I was flagged for Hep C. I got tested and was negative, but because of the flag I can never donate plasma with that company against because of the small tiny risk (even though I got officially tested negative).

it's not like a blood donation other than the mechanics of the procedure. the needle's huge, it takes a good 30-40 minutes with the big ass needle hanging in your arm, the separated plasma is replaced with cold ass saline that you feel circulate through you and makes your mouth taste metallic for a good half hour.
but, at least at the place I did it at when I was in school, they tested you for every blood borne disease known to man and paid you for it.

The process is very similar to donating double reds, which is what I specified. I didn't think the needle was any bigger and I didn't feel anything going back in me, although I did get the saline solution sent back in when donating double red cells. Double reds takes about the same time too, 40 mins or so.

I completed my 4th donation yesterday. I took almost a 2-month break after my 3rd.
I will be receiving $65 for the donation :D $50 because I'm still under 5 donations total, an extra $10 because it was 30 days since I last donated and another $5 from a coupon I printed out online :oldlol:
I'm planning on calling it after my 5th donation though. I'll collect another $50 and move on.
