This is pretty much all you need to know. There are a million other books etc out there but none of them "count" anymore. The movie released on the 17th will follow just the movies. In a galaxy far, far away....
Key terminology
Coruscant: This planet is the Capital of the Republic (and Empire). It is in the part of the galaxy known as the Core Worlds. Planets further away are usually referred to as Outer Rim planets. An example if Tattooine, where Anakin Skywalker is originally from. It is known as a city that stretches an entire planet. It stars at Level 1 (consider uninhabitable), and goes all the way up to Level 5127. Over 1 trillion (1,000,000,000,000) beings live on Coruscant with over 68% being humans.
The Force: The Force is a binding, metaphysical, and ubiquitous power in the Star Wars galaxy. It is an energy field that connects all living things in the galaxy. The power of the Force could be used by individuals who were sensitive to it, a power that was tapped through the presence and use of midi-chlorians. Anakin Skywalker and Yoda had two of the highest midi-chlorian counts ever recorded.
Usage of the Force granted a number of useful powers, such as the ability to sense impending attacks; to push and lift physical objects; influence the thoughts of others, known as the "Jedi mind trick"; and even see the future or maintain one's consciousness after death. Dark side users strong with the Force could summon lightning from their fingertips. Jedi taught younglings that the Force could be used for many purposes, including protection, persuasion, wisdom, the manipulation of matter and the performance of great physical feats.
Certain individuals that were not Force-sensitive sometimes doubted its very existence. For example, Han Solo once stated, when asked by Luke Skywalker if he believed in the Force, that "I've never seen anything to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything."
Jedi: The Jedi study, serve and utilize the Force, in order to help and protect those in need. The Jedi members, known as Jedi Knights respect all life by defending and protecting those who cannot do it for themselves, striving for peaceful and non-combative solutions to any altercations they encounter and fighting only in self-defense and for the defense of those they protect. Like their evil counterparts, the Sith, their main weapon is the lightsaber. By training the mind and the body the Jedi seek to improve themselves by gaining unfettered access to the Force while also seeking to improve those individuals and groups they come in contact with.
Sith: The Sith are dedicated to sith philosophy and to mastering the dark side of the Force.[2] The Sith members, known as Sith Lords or Dark Lords of the Sith, traditionally use the title Darth-prefix before their Sith name. The Sith are the archenemies of the quasi-religious Jedi and, like them, their main weapon is the lightsaber. While Jedi are subservient to the Force and aid the Galactic Republic by utilizing the Force for peace, knowledge and defense, the Sith prefer to exploit the Force for power, aggression or personal gain; desires that inevitably led to both imperial conquest and their own self-destruction.
The Jedi Order: The Jedi Order is composed of younglings, Padawans (apprentices), Jedi Knights, Jedi Masters, and Grand Masters (Yoda, and eventually Luke). The Jedi Temple is on the main Core Planet of Coruscant.
Lightsaber: The lightsaber is a weapon used by the Jedi and the Sith. Lightsabers consisted of a plasma blade, powered by a kyber crystal in Jedi weapons or a Sith crystal in Sith weapons, and emitted from a metallic hilt. It is a weapon that requires skill and training, and is greatly enhanced when used in conjunction with the Force. Though also used by the Sith, the lightsaber was synonymous with the Jedi, with some in the galaxy believing only Jedi used lightsabers.
Lightsabers were generally used both for combat and defense. A lightsaber could cut through virtually anything, from enemies to blast doors. The only ways to block the incoming attack of a lightsaber was with an electrostaff or another lightsaber. When used defensively, a skilled user could deflect blaster bolts with a lightsaber, and even reflect the shots back toward the shooter or some other target. Experienced Jedi could even employ their lightsabers to absorb Force lightning. Most practitioners used one, single-bladed lightsaber, though some used double-bladed lightsabers or even multiple lightsabers at once.
