it happens in all sports, if there's a player you need to stop you try and get inside his head and rattle him. Australia's known for it in cricket and football and growing up we were always taught if someones sledging or trying to rough you up it's just a sign that they are worried about you beating them and you should use it to add to your own confidence.

As a huge Reggie fan that Reggie/Kobe fight situation is what hit the nail in the coffin for me at the time, have respect for his game and so on, basketball is basketball, but he himself during those days was one of the biggest douches ever on & off the court.... what happened in that game was Reggie wanted to congratulate with some seconds left of the blowout/clear win game instead he found himself left hanging in a defensive stance Kobe nonchalntly pulling up for a 3 in his grill and turning his back/head walking away, Reggie felt it was unnecessary and said something like "Yea Kobe, keep padding those stats" or probably something worse/better (he was a good trashtalker afterall) and i think he deserved that, how can you disrespect a 37 year old legend like that as a young kid and then better yet respond by running up to him & sucker punching him.... after the game he went: "Reggie doesn't know me," he said. "He doesn't know me at all. And I'll never argue with fools. That's just a waste of time." He matured after that, but still, this one was hard to forget as a big / longtime Reggie fan.... lost much of my respect for him there, it got slowly back up as he matured tho, he wasnt like that at all afterwards (long time afterwards)....
