How is "I don't know" proof of them sussing out a trick question?
People generally hate replying "I don't know" to questions unless they think answering yes or no risks carries even more risks for their image/self-esteem.

We are predisposed to confidently saying "yes" or "no" rather than admitting our ignorance (even more so if the question is about opinions, not facts). Most of the time our cost/benefit analysis tells us there's no harm in declaring an opinion. To answer "I don't know" it would seem to me you'd need to have realized on some level there might be a trap in your answering the question... you wouldn't necessarily know why, but you'd have a hunch.

With that said, the question is ambiguous by design.

For instance, looking back on it, you can't exactly fault Democrats for being more ignorant than Republicans just because more of them answered either "yes" or "no". Logically speaking, "no" can mean "no, we should engage Agrabah diplomatically" (which is just as hilarious as saying "bomb those suckers") but also "no, because Agrabah doesn't exist."

There's also the possibility that many of those who answered yes were just trolling.

Regardless, the greatest part of this story is how everyone is using the poll to mock those who hold different political viewpoints... when the results clearly spare no one.

So, you have headlines that make it all about Donald Trump supporters... headlines about Republicans in general... but Breitbart actually makes this about Democrats! Everyone is so persuaded that the other is the stupid one.
