View Full Version : Was Kobe's dunk on Clint Capella (who?) amazing? Or just surprising?

Almost no elevation. Which a forgettable player half-heartedly contests (and who could blame him, Kobe's been running on fumes).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8d-qNw5URm4

It was more like an old man yelling at the clouds and seeing them coincidentally part rather than an actual triumph over age and gravity was it not? Inspiring in the sense that we see Kobe sort of overcome (but sort of not because he didn't get very high) his struggle with age by squeaking the ball above the rim in the way that it can only be considered impressive in the way it is to see a 50 year old man barely dunk in an empty gym. Sure, not many 2 guards at his 37 years of age may be able to. But still, for the amount of attention it got in a vacuum, compared with other dunks in NBA history (be them by Kobe, or anyone else) how would you guys truthfully rate it?

Well.... lets just say its as surprising as Wilt maintaining his regular season ppg average into the finals

It was definitely surprising in a sense that after all these years of seeing him having to suffer from injuries.

From the dunk to the camera work to showing everyone's reaction - it was a beautiful moment for Kobe/Laker fans. & when Dwight smiled :D it's real.

Reggie Miller ruined it... so corny.

The dunk was actually nice (in relative terms) given Bryant's physical limitations.
The athletic ability isn't there anymore but the style & skill was still on display.
And that Dwight reaction was funny.

I mean, just look at the Rockets' bench, even Corey Brewer was about to do the usual "hold up, don't cross the line" then realizes he plays for the Rockets.

More so surprising, you can tell Dwight was thinking the same thing. He was happy to see it, but you can tell he was laughing at how everyone was reacting. Probably saying to himself "You guys should of seen what he did to me my rookie year if you think that's impressive"

He's been doing a lot better lately, and I'd say this shot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfgGD_JBwiw) was more impressive than that dunk

This (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odALnIiQh0E) was awesome to see too. That's vintage Kobe. That's Kobe with "Venom in his veins"

Right now, considering he's retiring, and how he's played, every moment like that is going to be overblown. But it still should be appreciated

Don't want to make this about him, but if when Elgin dunked on Wilt he lost sleep over it...He would of been so ****ing mad if dunked on like that it'd be hilarious. Big guys dunking on him is another thing, but "little" guys? Kobe probably would have to apologize to his Center after Wilt vented his anger on him :lol

It was surprising, which can help make it feel amazing, depending on someone's feelings on Bryant. The circumstances surrounding a dunk can be a part of what provides the personality of a dunk.

Similarly, when Michael Jordan broke off his first dunk as a Wizard (preseason against the Nets), it wasn't a spectacular dunk in and of itself, but it was pretty great to see, which makes it feel like a better dunk than it was.

Sidenote, can't help but admit my Vince Carter fandom came to the forefront when I saw Bryant finish off that flush. Gotta show some love for what this dude was doing just two weeks ago, a month away from age 39:

Do you have the youtube clip of that VC dunk?

Capella barely even tried to contest it. :lol
Considering Kobe hadn't even attempted a dunk all season all he did was catch the defender by surprise. Nothing special about it tbh

It was one of those dunk of the game dunks. Good enough to make you say something when you saw it happen, but nothing more. But because Kobe did it at his age and currently being in the retirement tour it was definitely a stand up moment if you're a basketball fan.

Vince has perhaps kept his sheer vertical explosiveness better than any other "old" SG/SF in league history. MJ was close, he was still very underrated as a dunker while he played for the Wizards from 38-40. Jordan was also overcoming some challenges with knee issues, broken ribs, and generally being way overweight and out of shape in 2001. But he still played into shape and started being, relatively speaking, a still dangerous and explosive player, with a surprising number of dunks. He probably had more raw dunks that Vince at this age, but I think Vince still gets higher overall. No question however, that Jordan was a much better player than Vince at age 38. Still Vince is aging very gracefully and still a powerful dunker while Kobe overall looks absolutely horrible as a dunker, barely even able to do it. So in comparing the three of them as dunkers now:

1/1(a) Wizards Jordan/current Carter

(2) Kobe

Yeah, I think the bigger issue for Carter has been the decline of his first step; probably really kicked in with the Suns around 2010 before he appeared to regain his health and lose a little weight before joining the Mavs.

So, yeah, his dunk frequency has taken a hit. When those moments do arise though, he's still good for something legit here or there.

Sidenote, Dominique Wilkins deserves some recognition amongs the aged SG/SF crowd. He was 37 and 38 with the Spurs but was still pounding alley-oops and probably has the best tip-dunk off all-time for a wing aged 37 or older: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOMtuR2nOPY#t=2m27s

But like mentioned before, if Demar Derozen did this shit, it would just be disregarded.

Considering the circumstances, great dunk for Kobe.
