what kobe average vs tim in the playoffs anyway? 35ppg? LOL
would be 5-1 against him if robert horry didnt go 0 for 50 during that series in 03 ( not to mention kobe tearing his shoulder and knee )
but its not about numbers! its about rim protection!

seriously
imagine if hakeem started his career on the 1998 spurs and played his 18 year career under popovich and along side ginobili, parker etc...
he'd have 7-8 rings

Duncan outplayed Kobe in 99, 02 & 03.
Kobe outplayed Duncan in 01 & 08.
I don't remember the 04 series very well but statistically it seems close to a wash and they each outplayed eachother in 3 games (6 game series).
For now I would probably say Kobe had the better series by a small margin but its close and obviously Bryant had some major advantages in terms of his team situation/roster during that series.

kobe averaged 26/5/5 in 2002
won in 5 games
slammed his nuts down duncans throat multiple times
kobe averaged 32/5/4 in 2003 with a torn shoulder and torn knee
only lost cause of robert horry
slammed his nuts down duncans throat multiple times
kobe averaged 26/6/6 in 2004
won in 6 games
slammed his nuts down duncans throat multiple times
and yes kobe dominated in 2001 and 2008 aswell

kobe averaged 26.2/5/4.8 on .49%TS in 2002
Duncan averaged 29/17/4.6 on .52%TS
kobe averaged in 2003 with a torn shoulder and torn knee
True that he was injured. Duncan still outplayed him in that series.
kobe averaged 26/6/5.8 in 2004
Yup and Duncan averaged 21/12/3.3
Don't forget his superior defensive impact which isn't shown in these basic stats.

duncans rim protection vs kobe and the lakers was non existent
hence all the posters/facials
and rebounds doesnt make someone better. being the primary ball handler is just as important as catching balls that bounce off the rim
and we can argue stats all day but in the end its 4-2

In 02 Duncan averaged 29/17/5/4 and his next best teammate averaged 12/2/4. Then his best teammate after that averaged 9/2.
And you're seriously trying to argue Kobe outplayed Duncan in the 03 WCSF? Duncan put up 29/12/4 on .575 TS% and won in 6. Kobe put up 32/5/4 on .533 TS%. Kobe wasn't the best player on his team in the series, so you're really trying to say the Lakers had the two best players in the series and still lost? :facepalm :facepalm

i'm saying that in order to win you have to sacrifice.
sometimes the loser has better numbers. but winning is all that matters
and kobe won more often... infact... twice as much
and it should have been 5-1 if not for horrys colluding
its obvious he was partial to the spurs since he joined them after handing them the series in 2003

its silly to rank duncan over kobe when with 1/10th the number of chances kobes accomplished the same number of titles
duncan since day 1 has had a deep team, great coach and a great sidekick
meanwhile kobe had

1998 - a shit coach
1999 - a shit coach
2005 - a shit coach, a shit team, a shit sidekick

Phil Jackson on Kobe after the 2001 western conference finals against the Spurs
"I never asked Michael to be a playmaker," Jackson said. "That's the greatest player I ever had, that I could consider the greatest player in the game. Yet I never asked him to be a playmaker in those terms. I asked him to be a playmaker when he was doubled or tripled. Kobe has to set up the offense, read the defense, make others happy and he's doing a great job of it. Kobe has become the floor leader on a basketball team that was looking for that player who can not only be a scorer, but also be a playmaker who can consistently make big plays at critical times. It was very important for Kobe to step into that role he was envisioned at."
Steve Kerr
"When he took over, it's what Michael always used to do," said Spurs reserve and ex-Bull Steve Kerr. "A team would start to come back and make a run, especially in their home building, and their fans would get behind them, and all of a sudden -- bam! -- he just sucks the air out of the place. That's what Kobe was doing."

man you can just feel the bitterness within Kobe stans - it's a tough pill to swallow that your favorite player is missing the playoffs for the like the 4th year in a row and is going to be behind Duncan and Lebron and who knows who else by the time all their careers are over. so much damage control, so much hating. To be fair, I feel the same way about the Duncan vamps. Duncan-only fans, particularly on this board, overrate everything he does while undermining Kobe's accomplishments and H2H success against their hero. Then throw in the Kobe zealots with their counter-trolling, and its just a never-ending cycle of monkey's throwing feces at one another.

to be fair, I don't think you could find one reason for a Duncan stan to make a thread. all year
Duncan hasn't scored more than 16 points in any game this year. Kobe has lately been putting up numbers comparable to his prime and he's in his 20th season doing this.. of course people are going to be excited about that and make a thread.
What's there to get excited about for Duncan this year? "Hey Duncan played some pretty good defense for the 20 minutes he was out there and he even scored a few buckets, his team also won by 40 last night and he didn't even play" .. yeah.. no..
on the flip side of that you should be happy, there are two sides to this coin. For ever 2 Kobe threads about his great play there will be 4 made whenever he has a bad game, but when Duncan plays 28 minutes and scores 2 points as his team beats a playoff team like they did against Dallas.. nobody notices..

Torn labrum was during the rape season, the next season. Kobe had prime Shaq. More than Duncan ever had. Kobe had elite role players like Robert Horry, Derek Fisher, Rick Fox, Brian Shaw. Duncan had broken down Robinson, Derek Anderson until his injury, Antonio Daniels, Danny Ferry, Malik Rose, Rookie Parker, Washed up Terry Porter.
