Because the franchise low balled him with their new contract offers, played games with him using the media and told him that they had to pay Penny more then him.

Plus he wanted to play in LA (big media market) and a suave Jerry West woo'd him and offered him a huge contract.

I can't say for sure that Shaq wouldn't have left no matter what but the Magic did an incredibly horrible job of courting him as a Free Agent so really I can't feel that bad for them.

Shaq did only play 54 to Hardaway's 82 games that season...so it makes sense that Penny would be higher on the MVP list.

Yes . Shaq is different character to Orlando culture . Orlando didn't love Shaq and They love Penny as hell . And media gave credit a lot more to Penny than Shaq .

And Shaq thinking about on that . "We lost and failed in playoffs , people love Penny more than me and I'm f.kking Shaq" .

And he want to getting love and success as a clear first option .

He did leave Lakers and Heat for same situation .

He and the franchise weren't seeing eye to eye. Shaq wanted better pastures and he got it.

There's a SI article I read years ago about how Shaq was golfing and the Orlando GM flew in from a helicopter near the golf course to give him the max contract but Shaq left before he got there.

Here is an excerpt from Shaq's book.

Shaq :
I wanted to stay in Orlando. Leonard (my agent) wanted me in Los Angeles because of Hollywood and all the opportunities, but also because he knew right away Orlando wasn't going to pay me.
---
I loved the DeVoss family. They were great people. I think it was John Gabriel's call.

He started low, too low. The Magic offered me $69 million.
We were keeping an eye on the other free agents in the league.
Leonard called me up and told me Juwan Howard had signed for $105 and Alonzo Mourning had signed for $110 million.

Now the market was set. Orlando had to pay me $100 million but they wouldn't.
They came back with four years, $80 million.
---
I asked John Gabriel why they wouldn't pay me what they knew I deserved and he said, "We don't want to upset Penny. We can't pay you more then Penny."
I couldn't believe that. It was like they had punched me in the gut.

In the meantime, Jerry West, the general manager for the Lakers, is calling and telling us, "Listen, I know you deserve more then Juwan and Mourning, but right now all I can get you in $98 million."

I was so glad to hear that I told Leonard, "Let's take it. Let's take the $98 million and get this over with. I want to be somewhere where I'm wanted."

Right about that time, the Orlando Sentinel came out with a poll. The first question they asked was "Is Shaquille O'neal worth $115 million?" Ninety-one percent of the people said no.

I'm ready to take the $98 million from LA, but Jerry West calls back and he's excited because he had just traded George Lynch and now he can give us seven years and $121 million. I loved Jerry West before, but now I loved him even more.

By that point I just wanted it done. That poll had bothered me.
The fans seemed like they had turned on me.
I had worked my ass off for that city, and this is how they repaid me?
---
At that point the Magic realized they had totally blown it, so they made a last-ditch effort to salvage the deal.

John Gabriel and Bob Vander Weide hopped on a private plane to Atlanta. They went to see Leonard (my agent), who was shagging volleyballs for USA star Holly McPeak.

They told Leonard they would match what the Lakers were offering. Leonard said thank you and sent them on their way, but it was too little too late.
I hadn't signed anything, but I had given Jerry West my word I was going to play for the Lakers and I wasn't going back on that.
---
Gabriel knew it was over. Bob Vander Weide said to him as they flew back to Orlando, "I thought that went well." Gabriel answered, "Bob, we've lost him."

When Jerry West flew into Atlanta with the contract, he was so nervous he was actually shaking.
He was telling me, "We're going to win a lot of championships. We've got you and I've got this eighteen-year-old kid coming in. Wait until you see him. He's going to be the best player in the league some day."

there's a doco with shaq and his college coach where he talks about orlando too, he wanted to stay in orlando but they offered him less money because they wanted to save cash for penny. he also said he was upset with the little penny ads and the fact penny was getting more promotional deals than he was at the time due to big men not supposed to be able to sell products being the thinking back then in business.

and the local papers didn't make it any better. Shaq mentioned the poll with 90% of the fans saying he wasn't worth the hundred plus million. There was another asking the fans if they had to choose between Shaq or coach Brian Hill who they would take and the fans chose Hill.

the fans and the team preferred penny and the coach over Shaq and didn't want to pay Shaq what two different teams are willing to pay Juwan Howard.

the heat and bullets were both willing to give Howard over 100 million and Shaq who put your franchise on the map and is easily better than him you offer 59 million?

that would be like the Thunder offering Kevin Durant 54 million after the Bulls game Jimmy Butler 94. it's just a straight up slap in the face by market value

no athlete is worth 100 million bucks, but it seems the ads from idiots like us watching is worth a few billion, so I guess someone has to get over paid to pass all that absurd money around. meanwhile smart people who really know their stuff have their friends jealous over them making a messily 200k

Well even Jerry West can`t get everything right :lol

I remember Shaq talking about money and being better than Mourning, thus deserving more than him. I think it was that easy. He was always the big insecure baby, still is.
I can actually see why Kobe and the Lakers abandoned him when they did. Still think they would be better of with Shaq but I can see how exhausting he was for the organization.

Partially perimeter players being worshiped because of Jordan era and just DeVos being an idiot. That move by DeVos cost this franchise multiple titles.
