Thanks ISH gamers. Your help is appreciated.
My son has a Wii U 8GB. I want to get an external hard drive. How important is an external power source? If I get a 3TB hard drive with no external power source is it bad? I want to get him a Nintendo Eshop for $100 on top. Can a 3 TB hard drive with no external power source do the trick?
Whatever I can do to compensate let me know

Mine has no external source. It doesn't matter at all. It has to be a compatible drive though.

Thanks my handsome friend. What if I don't have an external power source?

Did some quick research and it looks like NTFS works fine, so that is good. It looks like the hard drive cannot be formatted for anything else after you format it to the Wii U, so keep that in mind. In that sense, 3tb might be too big and a bit of a waste.

I didn't know it was possible, but an SSD would be an awesome idea if it greatly reduces loading times. Unfortunately they're not nearly as large as HDD and much more expensive.

this was one of the things i'm getting for my nephew, had to do a lot of learning on my own :lol
3tb is wasting money
Is there a maximum size for external storage devices used with Wii U?
If the Wii U has the most recent system update installed, it will be able to recognize a storage device of any size, but 2TB will be the maximum amount of storage capacity that can be used. Any extra capacity in the storage device beyond the 2TB will not be accessible via the Wii U.

My biggest worry is the external power source. Is it necessary? Does it draw that much power?

Extenal power isnt necessary. 3tb is overkill. I just bought a 64gb USB stick and use that. Runstotally fine zero issues for the last 3 or so years.

How about just 1TB? Does is take less power?

While we're in here... how do I mod my Wii U so that I can 'trial' games by downloading them and playing them?
Just link me brethren. I only have the games that came with it and Mario Kart. Would love to 'try' games out before I buy them :pimp:

Power won't be an issue. External drives dont draw much. A 1tb would be good and more than enough. Wii u dodsnt5 use much space to install things.
