game was posted a while back iirc, but this video looks higher in quality.

insane highlights nevertheless. magic with today's perimeter friendly rules = unstoppable in transition and the post. look how he finds every crack in the seam - a master of using angles.

you can't defend somebody with that kind of feel for the game. high iq basketball personified.

i remember reading a james worthy quote on who he had a tougher time guarding between larry and jordan - he said bird, because you have to "play the game like a thinker". i think that quote encapsulates magic's abilities as well.

So true, with Magic and Bird you had to guard against their vision to not only see the basket but also the four other players as well. You couldn't angle them off from the many angles they were working with.

I've always been kind of bummed to have missed Magic Johnson in his prime. Even when catching him as a shell of his former self in 1996, there was enough there to marvel. Even if just for a few moments, it was awesome to experience what I imagine people felt throughout the 80's when he led a fastbreak, when Magic was the only one in the house who knew what was going to happen next.

Unfortunately, I don't think his open court showmanship and improvisation has the same effect during highlight reels because highlight reels introduce a sense of expectation. Watching him play in '96 gave me similar feelings to what I've experienced watching guys like Vince Carter (for dunks), Jason Kidd (for having Magic-like vision and being four steps ahead at all times), and Stephen Curry (for the types of incredible shots he pulls off every single game).

I don't know, it's like, you can watch Stephen Curry shooting highlights and they're still amazing, but for those who watched it unfold live, there's something extra that comes along with witnessing it firsthand, no?

Funny, I just did this post earlier this month.

"Seeing showtime was my best basketball experience ever tho, seeing Jordan was more hypnotizing. Seeing Showtime was a different kind of product. With Showtime it was best to see it from higher seats because Magic used the whole court and you could see plays develop like you were in Magic's head. You would get four or five big time gifts of art materializing in your head with a bang. Something about the guys knowing great formation so that his brilliance could show. Something about watching the different angles work was magical. And the number of great plays was about the same as watching Jordan, who always had great games at the Garden."
