View Full Version : The All-Star Game is a Sham

The NBA is trying to have it both ways. If it is an exhibition for the fans why on earth did it cost Kyrie Irving 14M+ to have Justin Bieber tweet love for Lowry? If on court play doesn't matter why are ASG used in deciding HoF worth?

Kobe is likely to start the ASG this year. He has had an incredible career but he hasn't been a top 150 player for the last three years as he avg 19ppg on .366 FG%. Yet he has started all three games (or would have without injury). Its simply unjust when Dirk has only started 2 ASG games and Kawhi has not even made an ASG.

There have been 59 players in the history of the game that have had more than 3 ASG starts. So saying the Kobe of the last three years is top 60 ALL TIME is insane.

All Star game is not what it was used to be. It's a popularity contest. Any true basketball fans know that and it should not have any weight on how good they are. It's so commercialized that the only event I actually watch is the 3 point contest.

It's a showcase to the fans. There is NOTHING wrong with that. NBA Basketball, at its heart, is entertainment.

Exactly why I hold no value towards all-star selections

It's for the fans. There is nothing competitive about it, so the fans get to vote in the starters.

Don't worry, Kawhi is guaranteed of making the team. Not as a starter, not this year.

Seriously.

AI in 2010, Kareem in 1989, Dr. J in 1987. Kobe isn't going to be the first washed up guy to make an all-star game and he won't be the last.(same thing will happen to Lebron in 5-7 years.)

MJ wasn't even voted into the all star game in 2003 and had to basically ask one of the other players to give him their spot and yet people are made about the fans actually voting Kobe in :oldlol: :oldlol:

I never watch the all-star game. I spend enough of my time watching basketball games that are actually competitive and relevant. Sitting in front of a TV watching a dumb exhibition would make me feel like a putz who really needs to find more hobbies.

If Kyrie has any sense of dignity, he'll disqualify himself

i'm also surprised that reggie jackson isn't even on the list...he's playing better than Kyrie!

No shit it's a popularity contest. If the fans vote in Kobe, they wanna see Kobe. It's been like this forever.

My man Small Paul Trill Millsap came 13th in voting when he's been a top 3 forward in the Eastern Conference thus far... so, yes, it's a sham.

On the other hand, the All-Star game is for the kids.

He voted into the all star game, he just wasn't a starter.

You got your history wrong.

Isiah Thomas, the coach of the East, was putting INTENSE pressure on Vince Carter to give up his starting spot to Jordan. I think it went on for weeks, Vince reluctant to do it.

Where'd you get this "ask one of the other players" shit from? Jordan didn't ask for shit.

The allstar game is a pretty bullshit "game" which is a stretch to even call it that.

Although what is interesting is to see who got the allstar MVP each year.

2000 Shaquille O'Neal
2000 Tim Duncan
2001 Allen Iverson
2002 Kobe Bryant
2003 Kevin Garnett
2004 Shaquille O'Neal*
2005 Allen Iverson*
2006 LeBron James
2007 Kobe Bryant
2008 LeBron James
2009 Kobe Bryant
2009 Shaquille O'Neal
2010 Dwyane Wade
2011 Kobe Bryant
2012 Kevin Durant
2013 Chris Paul
2014 Kyrie Irving
2015 Russell Westbrook

Pretty solid list except for Kyrie Irving. No offense to 2014 kyrie but he wasn't as good as any of the other names relative to the rest of the league

The thing is, very selfom does a player get voted as an all-star who wouldn't be selected as a reserve, and usually when it happens it's because fans vote for an injured player. Kobe's case is pretty rare, where a healthy player is voted in who is undeserving of being an all-star altogether. It happens from time to time, but not as much as some people make it out to. More often than not the 12 guys selected as all-stars would be there with or without fan voting.

Only about 6% of players are all-stars any given year, and the majority of NBA players will never make an all-star team. It's still a great honor to be selected, even though the game itself is a joke.

I personally in no way believe that the Kobe vote totals are real. He is WAY too out in front of Curry, Bron, etc. to make it even halfway realistic.

Love The Mamba, but this absolutely smells of NBA Adam Silver/David Stern manufactured bs to assure him starting in the game to me.

p.s. I'd like to add they're doing it for ratings for the game, a story, drama...
