The fact that the author was 100% incorrect in saying that they broke debate rules, that part of debate has been performed that way for YEARS by white students as well. He literally updated the article apologizing for being wrong.

The trend has been for (mostly white) debaters to talk about nuclear war in a debate about education policy, the environment in a debate about military policy, post structuralism pretty much whenever they feel like it, etc.

That suggests that changing the topic of discussion is normal but not that it was normal for the debaters to play hip hop music and blurt out buzz words quickly between bouts of gibberish as if they were a crazed homeless person.

Another article I read defending the winners of the debate spoke about how their "style" is pretty new and was introduced by black debaters.

Anyway I just think its sad that a student these days can go on stage and hyperventilate while speaking at an incredible rate and spouting random buzzwords between unintelligable gibberish and she'll win a so called "debate" competition.
Its just stupidity and should not be taken seriously as anything but that.

I think the snapping arose from poetry slams and shit like that where (I think, I've never actually gone) they snap when they agree or like it because clapping drowns out the words too much, I guess it's just expanding.
