View Full Version : Do you judge people based on their first name?

This lady judges who her children are or are not allowed to be friends with based on a snap judgement of their first name. The name the childrens parents gave them. Because she believes it tells her all she needs to know about their economic class in society.

Judgment should be based upon one's consciousness and actions primarily.
But to directly answer, it is a child's right to have a respectable name.
CavsFTW, have you considered rephrasing your questions and condensing your message. Say more, type less ?

Would you mind drawing a few conclusions for us based on these names? Pretend you're trying to decide who to hire for your new local business. In what order would you want to interview these applicants:
Faheem
Tyler
Hasina
Ebony
Dustin
Jake
Demetrius
Allison

It's fine IMO if youre filtering out ghetto names or ethnic names from cultures you may not want your child to be close to.

No interview for Ebony.
I'd interview traditional white/chinese male names first. Then traditional white female names. Then the other cultures. I probably wouldnt interview black names (at least for my industry). I am working in financial software modelling, so for a different industry like Retail or something I'd probably interview the white females first. For sports I'd interview the black guys first. It depends on the industry, but the name on the resume does matter.

My race shouldn't be relevant to this. I think it is appropriate for parents of all cultures to want to avoid their kids hanging out with dudes that have stereotypical ghetto names. A well educated/classy black family most likely does not name their kid some ridiculous sounding name. Same goes for white. Same for every race. Would you interview a girl named Flower or Aphrodite or some shit? No. You'd rather interview Jessica or Jane.
Whats in a name? When its a silly name, a lot.

Are we supposed to be judging solely based on the name, with all other factors and qualifications held equal? In that case, Michael gets the nod over Mekemba. 99% of corporate would do the same.
The reason? Michael probably is more accustomed to North American culture and easier to work with and communicate with.

I dont think I need to entertain these individual cases when my general point should already be clear: if you have a wack ass name, people will judge you for it. If you have a foreign or unfamiliar name, prepare to face slight difficulties compared to Alex Smith. Whether that is "right" is up to the individual.

Completely regardless of whether or not you judge someone for it, parents shouldn't be able to decide who their kids are friends with at all, especially based on that weak reasoning. If you want your kid to only hang out with rich kids you are ruining their life.

What's wrong with wanting my kids to hang out with other rich kids? I want to send my kids to private school like my parents sent me. I don't want my kids picking up bad habits and going down the wrong road by hanging out with a bad crowd.

The lady in the video actually specifically said she wouldn't let her kids hang out with other kids that had those celebrity-like gimmick names. So for her it wasn't about wealth discrimination. It was about social class discrimination. And she personally lumped celebrities and professional athletes with the bottom of the social class, not the top.
