View Full Version : Apple... utter garbage...

Why does this company get praise for being intuitive and apparently reinventing the way we look at technology?
Everything is a freaking pain with them.
Macbook won't recognise my android phone without some third party software.
Macbook won't let me copy and paste items on my external hard drive due to it being NTFS format... Had to reformat the whole thing so it could be compatible with everything.
Girlfriend connects her phone to get some of my music on her iPhone. Apparently it needs to delete literally every single file of hers due to it being synced to another computer previously.
Why can't anything be easy with these apple computers? I'll be fair, and admit I haven't run into any of these problems previously, but then again, that was due to still running a lot of these tasks on my windows computer out of habit. Something as simple as transferring files from my Mac onto my back up hard drive for safe keeping could not be done... I mean, seriously...
I'll further add that the Macbook Air I'm using is a fantastic little machine when it is literally used as a single piece of equipment. Try and connect it to an ecosystem that isn't anything else Apple and it becomes a pain. Hell, even when it was another Apple product, it was a pain...

This.
Now I'm not praising Apple or Windows or Droid but you have to remember these companies make computers and communicating devices and it would be advantageous for them to streamline their product line with one another.
Depending on what I have, I like to have my communicating devices match my computer.
To do otherwise is simply dumb.
Basically the OP can make the same argument on why his stupid Droid phone isn't compatible with Apple.

yeah no this is bullshit.
apple is the only company that pretty much has a walled garden approach with their stuff.

This.
Other than their original ipods (which still required itunes), most of their products are garb.
I used to have iphones but, it's just so much easier to use a droid. Or in my case now, the S6.
Plus, Apple is user liberal. It's funny, seeing hippies praise them while they install cargo nets on their factories in China to keep people from jumping off the roof lol arguing for human rights at the same time.
Do as I say, not as I do.

I actually agree with OP.
The examples he used are legit gripes that even the most die hard fans have.
Apple ain't perfect and it's closed ecosystem has its pros and cons, the examples given by OP are some of the cons.
But I still use it because those are small annoyances that I don't deal with often enough. I thought about Linux but that's even more of a pain it seems.

Many companies have propietary systems.
Last time I checked I couldn't use an Xbox game with a PlayStation. Sega games can't be played on Nintendo systems. I can't replace Some Samsung parts with some of Sonys. And just because Android is open source it doesn't mean there aren't restrictions placed by OEMs.
I mean, are you guys forgetting how MS was being sued for monopoly?
Speaking of compatibility and MS, you still need drivers for many things. Not as bad as it was, but still more annoying than Apple.

You can't beat a MacBook pro. Even if you love windows a MacBook Pro running Windows is better than any laptop you can find simply because of the trackpad.
I just got a new one a week ago. My old one broke, found out that it's an issue Apple got sued over. I gave it to them Tuesday and picked it up yesterday. The put a new logic board in it and now I'm selling it. Apple isn't always terrible.

some things are obviously a lot easier and more convenient, but some things are also not so convenient. i mean, they're not challenging obstacles to overcome, but the old way was just straightforward, quick, and simple.
it'll probably take some time to adapt.
but yeah, it's a good solid machine. but it could be a lot better if apple just loosened up a little.

My view has always been....if I have $1800 to spend on a new laptop, that money goes A LOT further buying non-apple laptop than an apple laptop.
Build them from scratch, and you can make a machine far superior than a macbook for the same price.
But, some people like Apple, and will always like apple. They're cool and all, but they're not practical for me.

It won't be as good looking (relatively) and most people don't need that much firepower. Plus most people don't have that friend who can build laptops. Heck, most people don't even know how to install Windows from scratch.
What many people need are laptops that look good, easy to use, with plenty of aftersales support. Apple provided all of those for a premium. Also, I've heard Macbook screen is preferred by art people and researchers because of the way it reproduce colors.

i already know the solution to most of my issues, and that is to spend more money to buy only apple products. that may not seem like a big deal to people with full apple gear, but to a new user, it's not a particularly fun transition. let me say i do enjoy my apple product but i still frequently ask, "why do you have to be such an inconsiderate b!tch?" :oldlol:

Video game studios will release versions of their games for Xbox, PS, Nintendo, etc. Unless they have some kind of exclusive contract or something...And each console should have their own in-house games too to distinguish themselves from the others. Mario(Nintendo), Halo(Xbox), Playstation used to have Crash, not sure who their new mascot is now.
Nothing wrong with having your own ecosystem but Apple seems to go overboard with their shit. Like, why do we need a specialized Apple-made USB charger for iPhones? The idea of the USB port is to be universal, at least I thought so.
One of the best things Apple ever did was put iTunes in Windows. Most people know iTunes is an Apple software/product.

The problem here really is user expectation and Apple refuses to match that when it's not hard to do so. Users expect an LG washing machine to accept Tide detergent. Or Panasonic TV remote to accept any brand's battery. But they do not expect Sega to accept Nintendo games. If LG comes out with a washing machine that only accepts LG detergent, then it will be a focal complaint point.
Users want better user experience while Apple has its strategic reasons for limiting this. Fair play on both sides imo.

are you complaining about how competing products cant be plug and play? that complaint is so 2004.
I'm complaining at how not user friendly a large majority of their features are. Even in regards to their own products. It is 12 years later, and they don't have a feature where you can sync to multiple computers and not have to delete content off your APPLE phone to put new stuff on?
It can't even recognize an android phone without 3rd party software...
It can't even perform more than a read on a hard drive in a pretty standard format...
These are all very basic things and yet such an expensive piece of hardware can not do it. It is so closed off and restricted. They already have the largest profit margins out there... Surely they can reward their users with basic features now. All it is, a simple software update to make a lot of this possible.
My point is, my windows computer can do these for me, though I obviously did not have it with me at the time. I thought something as basic as these tasks could be performed by my even more expensive Apple system.
At the end of the day, I get it though. Create this ecosystem, market it incredibly well, which they have, and reap the profits. Their computers aren't any better than Windows ones. In fact they are factually worse and less capable, yet people are out paying premium prices. The only reason I got mine actually is due to it being the cheapest option in terms of Ultrabooks. I wouldn't have got one otherwise, but like I said, I have been fairly happy outside of these few issues.

one of my cousins is a trendy kinda hipster guy. he always talks about how much he loves macs. I remember trying to get him to actually explain why he thinks macs are so much better but all he kept saying was you get what you pay for and they are way better. He doesn't do any design/audio work or anything like that, couldn't name a program/app he uses on mac that isn't on pc. Just uses it to browse the net but it's so much better according to him.
He did ask for help once trying to get his mac to work with some work software he had, he complained about how shit his work is because they don't support macs with their database software never mind the fact he knew that before deciding to buy a mac for work.

Apple is overpriced and their closed system can be a pain in the ass at times but their system is very smooth and I have rarely run through any issues. I hate using cliches but their products "work" and they work intuitively for the most part. I have had my macbook air for over 3 years and it's still running strong. In contrast I have probably gone through 4-5 window labtops within 10 years and I would constantly have to reformat them and install a fresh copy of windows
I also loathe itunes and the fact I can't use my iphone as a portable hard drive is another criticism. But I have gone through multiple androids and IOS is a more stabler operating system.

Did you update your Iphone to the latest firmware?
In that case it's probably your Iphone becoming slower rather than the S4 getting faster. Apple is known for liberally pushing out updates which decrease the performance of their older models.
I have had my macbook air for over 3 years and it's still running strong. In contrast I have probably gone through 4-5 window labtops within 10 years and I would constantly have to reformat them and install a fresh copy of windows
I find most people who say this don't really use a very comparable reference point. Most people buying a laptop for school or something just get a <500 dollar budget unit. Of course it doesn't compare to something 2, 3, 4 times the price.
If you spend $1000-1500 on a higher tier Windows laptop it will also stay viable a lot longer, it will also have good components which "just work".
At my work we have a bunch of 5 year old business grade Dell laptops running intensive processes 30+ hours a week, and they are still fine and still keeping up with all the latest and greatest software.
Honestly though, regardless of you using a high or low quality machine, if you constantly have to reformat and reinstall Windows on your computers you are a bit digitally challenged. The only reason that is necessary is because you are unknowingly overloading the machine with bad applications and viruses.
So Apple is probably a good choice for you, it is definitely a safer system for people with very limited computer skills.

I have had a variety of labtops some from pretty expensive and the last windows was a simple Asus "Netbook" that actually lasted the longest which I only paid $300 for. I'm probably more advanced than most people with computers and have used other linux OS and ran Ubuntu for a while with one of my old labtops. I actually liked Ubuntu other than some small issues here and there. Recently I installed windows on one of my macs so my wife can play a PC game and I inadvertently ended up installing spyware on windows within minutes. Granted looking for a pirated version of a program using google is not the safest move but the fact most viruses and/or spywares were built for windows make them more prone to such attacks.
I'm no apple fanboy and would consider getting the Surface Pro 4 but I have become a bit accustomed to Mac and it's ease. Also most of my stuff is synchronized (ie iphone, apple tv, macbook) and most of the synchronization works flawlessly. I understand google and android have similar synchronization but I always find myself wasting time to sync up the different systems. Aslo I don't play PC games and can't really see the benefit of getting windows other than cost. Even then I'm not the type that buys newest technology and would rather wait a year and buy it used at a cheaper price and resell the same technology and get a decent return of what I paid for it back.

Im an Apple fanboy for a reason.
I actually used to hate Apple and all things associated with it (much like some of you). I could build my own tower with superior specs at a fraction of the cost, or go to a pc swap meet at Pomona and just buy custom made pcs, which on paper would appear to smoke any mac.
But I'd be in the studios and everyone had macs. They hardly ever had any issues, everything was plug and play, rarely did they worry about drivers, they were virus worry free, they had features I wish I had, their filing system wasn't as cluttered, drag and drop was magical, etc.etc. but I didn't want to admit it.
One thing I NEVER EVER saw them do or worry about was maintenance, ever. All my pc having friends would always do some type of maintenance on their pcs, either upgrading RAM, running system maintenance, antivirus scans, driver updates, etc.etc.
Anyways, fed up with pcs I decided to make the jump and bought a 1st gen Mac Mini. It was small, inexpensive so I figured why not?
Never looked back since.
Every now and then I take the new Windows OS for a spin, I try out the newest pc at a cousin's home (since they're always buying new ones every year) and I have yet felt the urge to switch back.
Call me what ya'll want, I am a fanboy for a reason.

I've neevr used mac os but I recently made the switch from android to iphone and am very pleased with how smooth my iphone is. I have an ipad as well. There's no replacing how smooth apple devices run. The only reason android and windows are still popular is because of american consumerism and their like for having the biggest, fastest, and newest tech. More often than not, these things come at a price: less reliability and efficiency.
The older i get, the more i value reliability in all aspects of my life. This is why i chose a toyota tacoma, one of the most reliable vehicles ever created. For the price, I could have bought a bigger f150, or silverado, but those aren't very reliable vehicles.

I also hesitantly bought Mac and never look back. It's been over 5 years and still running smooth and not a single problem for this one. Before that, I used like 3 different deskstop on that time frame and wasted a lot of time trying to fixed it.
Did you update your Iphone to the latest firmware?
In that case it's probably your Iphone becoming slower rather than the S4 getting faster. Apple is known for liberally pushing out updates which decrease the performance of their older models.
Yah. Latest version. Maybe it's just my mind. But it feels nice using the android a little. Wish I could go back and forth on phones lol.
