View Full Version : The problem with Free throw orientated superstars

Too much of their impact on the game is out of their control
Harden and Cousins are the best examples
Harden melts in the playoffs, he can't control the free throws he receives
And Demarcus will never achieve team success as a 1st option, because too much of his game is dependant on factors he can't control. At some point he'll hit a brick wall
This is the difference between stars, and SUPERSTARS
Guys like Curry and Lebron and KD and Westbrook... Their greatness is in their control. They still benefit from free throws, BUT they do not rely on them.
To rely on free throw offense, is to lose control of your own impact. Leaving into the hands of officials.

If we're talking last year, Harden had a 24.8 PER, ws/48 over .2 and a bpm of 7.5
Cousins hasn't been to the playoffs so how do you value that aspect?
The issue with shooters has always been they aren't consistent and that's an issue. The need for free throws adds an element, but the ability to get to the line should give a player the ability to score too. Things like body control and getting defenders off balance, a good player at it should have an alternative.

Harden's game is heavily reliant on free throws. We've seen it time and time again. He struggles to impact the game without his free throws. He has no counter move when push comes to shove.

Hey GIF
aren't you a lebron stan???

This is the another reason why Kobe is better than real lambo jr
Kobe when attacking the offense in his prime would look for cracks in the D at all time and only make contact with the D when absolutely necessary, often contorting and twisting his body into awkward angles in order to improvise according to the way he's being played defensively
Makes for a much smoother offensive flow and makes the game even easier for his teammates to read since you know the spacing will always be more proper since you already know Kobe will be moving towards the most open area on the floor AWAY from the D (even if it's with 2 defenders on his hip chasing or contesting him) while because lebron wants to seek contact from his defender and his teammates defenders he's often going to be making moves that strategically only beneficial when with the consent of the referee
So while kobe is shooting a lower percentage.. He's forcing the defense to constantly be in scramble/chase mode because of his improvisational skills which is much more devastating to a defense while Lebron is just allowing the defense to play a game that is gonna require much more discipline than creativity defensively.. And it is much more difficult for an nba defense to be creative than disciplined when it matters most.
So thanks for finally understanding why 2/6 is 2/6 :applause:
