He's their best player and he's making like minimum wage (for NBA standards)
They already gave Dragic, Wade, Bosh all $20M each
Do they even have Whiteside's Bird rights?

nope. no bird rights. i doubt this current Heat team will be together again next year.

@OP
Wade & Deng's contracts are expiring this season. 20m & 10m, both have no other choice & are likely going to take a paycut if they see a future within this roster. Wouldn't be shocked if teams will try to throw 14m per at Whiteside. Wade needs to take a page out of Duncan's book & take a huge paycut. Hassan leaves, Dwight leaves Houston -- then they sign Dwight.
Birdman at 5m, Haslem 2m, Udrih 2m, etc -- shit most of their bench are all expirers.
Think hard Pat Riley. Trade or hope he'll re-sign? The moment of truth.

Heat can't get equal value in a trade. Whiteside's salary is too low.

I'm not talking about a trade, Dwight can opt out this summer.

I'd rather lose Whiteside for nothing in free agency than trade for Dwight Howard

Let their FAs walk, except for Wade/Whiteside/Johnson.
Next, they have to sign Wade to a contract that leaves sufficient room for Whiteside's salary. Sign a FA using their Room Exception. Sign Tyler Johnson to a new deal. Fill out rest of roster with minimum salary players.

Trust the Godfather.
Whiteside is not a max player, but that doesn't mean someone won't throw max money at him. Wade will be taking less money, hence his current one year max contract. He took a one year deal specifically to give the organization flexibility moving forward.
And btw, if a player barely plays in 4th quarters, he's not your team's best player. Whiteside has a long ways to go before being the best player on a team.

Whiteside might be a bit overrated.
Doesn't seem to have very good court awareness and while his block numbers are goofy I don't think they accurately reflect his real defensive impact.
His rebounding has been excellent.
Offensively he is pretty limited. Has done well as a finisher on limited volume (ala Tyson Chandler) but beyond that he can't do much.
So yeah... he is a Tyson Chandleresque type player. A very good roleplayer.
Not deserving of a max contract.

Thats why many think a trade is coming. Maybe for DH12 or ...

Who invented this stupid idea that they can't afford him?
Miami has 48 mil committed next year including McBob who they will probably look to dump at the deadline

he has far far better touch around the basket than a Tyson Chandler/ Jordan. Better hands too

Whiteside is NOT a max player. He has come a long way but he reminds me of the guy that will stop going all out once he gets paid.

Heat would be better off investing their future into Whiteside rather than Wade. Let Wade walk if you have to.

Whiteside and Durant this off-season would make Boston Boss. Wish we attracted free agents, we can afford them.
The Heat will have approximately 37 million dollars in cap space next season.
Whiteside's Max is 20.2 million.
"They won't be able to afford him" Obviously some of y'all have no clue about the landscape of the salary cap next season.

Funny fact: a NBA-team has more than 1 player.
How many are under contract next summer and how will the get better by giving Whiteside 20M when they are not good enoughg now to win?
sure they can afford him but not when they want to trade for or sign another big free agent.

37 million in cap space including,
Bosh
Dragic
McRoberts
Winslow
Tyler Johnson (1 million cap hold, can go OVER the cap to re-sign)
Richardson
Stokes
All on the books. So the Heat have essentially enough to re-sign their two key unrestricted free agents in Whiteside and Wade, with no issues.
Now If Kevin Durant somehow can be wooed, and decides he wants to play for the Heat next summer, then obviously there will be a casualty or two, but that's depending on the slimmest of chances.
The Heat will have NO issues re-signing Whiteside if they want too. None.

Sure, but will Whiteside want to stay or go somewhere where he will be utilize d to the max and not have to sit out 4th quarters?
