Who do you have?

IMO the list should be

Rip Hamilton
Alex English
Dirk
Adrian Dantley
Bernard King
George Gervin
LeBron
Steve Nash
Paul Pierce
and finally
Ray Allen

IMO its a lot of older players in this list, the mid range has become a lost art in today's NBA, it was more specialized in the past.

When it comes to this question, my criteria is being a great scorer numbers wise. And from there, putting a FOCUS to dominate a game from the midrange area consistently:

MJ
Bird
Kobe
King
Dantley
English
McAdoo
Dirk
Iceman
Pierce
Melo
Mullin

only a few guys from today's game - players go for the easy stuff nowadays - midrange shots are too hard.

Basically any decent player from the 80's or before.. They had no choice - defenders didn't guard the 3-point line, so they just crowded the paint.

When the paint looks like this, ballhandlers don't even CONSIDER getting to the rim - the only option is a midrange jumper:

NBA.com defines "midrange" as all shots outside the paint that are inside the 3-point line.

In Jordan's 63 point game against the Celtics' #1 defense, 12 of his 22 made field goals were 2-point jumpshots outside the paint (midrange):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsRu0x_bQeY

3 more jumpshots were made slightly inside the paint... Overall, 15 of Jordan's 22 made field goals were jumpshots.

And that was just Game 2... In Game 1 of that series (his 49 point game), 9 of his 18 made field goals were jumpshots outside the paint (plus 1 more jumper that was slightly inside the paint):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wId1-GdesWU

So in Games 1 and 2 combined, 21 out of his 40 made field goals were 2-point jumpshots outside the paint (midrange), with another 4 jumpers coming just inside the paint.. Overall, 25 of his 40 made field goals were jumpshots.. Contrary to what many people think, Jordan was an elite midrange jumpshooter from the outset of his NBA career.

I really doubt MJ is a legit answer to be honest. He's clearly the first guy to come to mind, but while he was a great shooter in that range. He's not the best from shooting.

A guy like Jerry West might come to mind though many reasons why his stats won't look as such. Bird is a good choice. But bottom line is MJ was a great shooter but not all time great. his greatness was in large part to his abiltiy to get to the basket. and being a great shooter made that easier.

K. Malone had an absolutely devastating 15-17 footer. And Rip might be the GOAT at coming off screens and getting of a quick, accurate midrange shot.

But as others have said, you really needed to be efficient from the midrange before the popularity of the 3ball because that's where guys took a lot of their shots. So most guys were very efficient from the midrange.

Havent read through the thread but for me Dirk is easily number 1. Not only was he very accurate he could shoot it with a guy right in his face.

Among older guys Bernard King was money will his pullup J.

I'm on board with Bosh too. Among the PF's, I think he's in the top 10 of all time for the midrange shooting. And in terms of his scoring skillset, Bosh could have the most swingman style skillset of the 6'10 and up PF's. He has the great midrange game, is a legit threat from the three ball area, and is very effective slashing to the rack. A guy like Dirk is a better shooter BUT Bosh is much more athletic and better slashing to the rack. When he was coming out of college, many analysts thought Bosh had the necessities to play some SF in the NBA if he had too.

NBA.com defines "midrange" as all shots outside the paint that are inside the 3-point line.

Mid-range is pretty much considered 12-17ft

18ft to the 3pt line is considered a long 2
