Prime Kobe had less votes than Dwight Howard and Lebron.
He went a eight year period without being the leading vote leader.
He has lead three times while Michael Jordan lead like 9 times.
Only reason Kobe has this many votes is because he is retiring.

So Dwight Howard and Vince Carter are more popular than prime Kobe.

Dwight got more votes because the C position was so weak, he was the only legit center. Not really because he was more popular.

Viince defenitely, people were just in awe of what he was. It's too bad he wasn't always the player from 00/01 or after he got traded to the Nets.

Also, Kobe not leading often makes sense. He is always a polarizing player.

Yeah thats probably why Jordan has way more leading votes than anyone else he was less polarizing than guys like Lebron and Kobe.

Polarizing players draw votes, and Dwight was insanely popular btw.

He obviously earned that. He would be the best player along with the best moves where ever he played.

As for polarizing, he played his prime years in a different time frame compared to guys like LeBron and Kobe when the media wasn't as big. But he also kept his image pretty safe and the media always never got on him about it unless they had something against Jordan or said something negative (Sports Illustrated) about him in the press.

Dwight was popular, but I never found Dwight more popular than Kobe. He had a massive advantage when fans voted for C.

If it was G-G-F-F-F voting, I doubt we see Dwight leading the votes.

Very true. Part of the reason why they changed it to 3 frontline players was due to the center spot being eliminated/rendered obsolete in todays NBA.

Also, we have to keep in mind that Kobe played in a very competitive conference with many rivalries and great teams with great guards.. Also, the off-court drama & accusation during what would be many players prime years (25 - 28) hurt his marketability for a while. Nike didn't start promoting him until his 3rd year with Nike (2006) with his own shoeline. The fact that despite all of those prior controversies he regained so much popularity and marketability is a feat in of itself.
