View Full Version : Hakeem and Shaq showed the peak of what post play means

Hakeem in terms of ability, talent and outright skill and Shaq in terms of pure dominance. No one has ever competed with them in post play. Will we ever see another player who can match these two in the post again or has the game moved along? Is it even possible for it to come back?

I'd like to mention a few other names.
Dirk, who's an incredible post-up player.
Duncan, who's dominating down low
Kobe, for being a small guy leading the league in post-up efficiency in 12-13.

Greatest peak post players ever and no it's not possible for it to come back.

It's technically possible for it to come back but it's extremely unlikely imo.

Hakeem is arguably the most skilled player ever and Shaq was the most dominant player in league history, someone overtaking either of them as a post player is extremely unlikely.

Embiid was the first guy I've seen in a long time who had that sort of potential. Dude had everything. Physical tools, skills, natural feel/instincts, etc. Seemed like he added a new move to his arsenal every game. And all his moves looked like they were off the top of his head rather than being tirelessly practiced over and over in the gym. He just got it. Before all the injuries hit him I thought he was on his own tier in that class, whole level above Wiggins/Jabari. Still don't think he's done. Been some promising reports since his last surgery.

I will believe in embiid until he's out of the league and even then, will hope for a comeback story.

Andre Miller I think has the best post game of guard in in history for his tools. He was really slow and unathletic. Average size and he could still score well despite an average to poor jumper.

Another good name to mention is Al Jefferson

Hakeem, McHale, Duncan just in terms of post-moves were so damn good. Shaq was like a bulldozer out there (don't think I've ever seen a player use his size so well), but he did have good footwork. Kawhi Leonard's got good post moves for a swingman. Feel like teams and coaches are going away from it as much players themselves are (partly rule changes and uptake in 3's all around)

Illegal D create some space for post up players .

If that moment would lived in todays game , Number 4 wouldn't leave the Jordan .

Yep...Wilt and Kareem were just shooting set shots at peach baskets when they played.

Interesting, though, that a 39 year old KAJ was able to routinely score 40+ points on a 24 year old Hakeem with those "set shots."

And give up a 3 instead of a 2.

Hakeem was a better skilled post player than Kareem and Shaq was a more dominant low post player than Wilt.

Even back then it was allowed to double on the ball...
