Kinda the greatest movie ever made

Self-aware characters, rehashed plot devices, boring action scenes, it was terribly weak dude, let's be real about this turd. Even a film like Ex Machina from earlier this year had better special effects too. (You know there's a problem when the Phantom Menace has more depth and originality.) Granted, I guess it was okay in a splashy Fanta commercial kind of way, fkn tool.

The whole movie was just one big social agenda

No thought or originality to anything in the movie

And worst of all, it completely ruins the original trilogy

Ruins the legacy of the characters and the story

I felt similarly. I felt it was a gimmick that the producers knew would make billions just based on the fan base.

Do you guys who pretty much hate TFA think that the originals* were perfect?

*edit actually meant to say the original trilogy not prequels

None were actually perfect. I haven't watched the sequels in so long that I forgot which ones I liked the most. I remember liking the 4th a lot.

Force Awakens stuck to a basic formula that made the original trilogy memorable.

It reintroduced favorite characters and introduced new ones that will continue its legacy.

But at its core it provided something very few films have (even those considered technically superior) it had heart. And that is why people love the series (and disliked the prequels).

It is basic storytelling done right.

For those trying to get technical with shit like "thin characters", "weak plots" etc etc must keep in mind that this is a 'series'. Everything will unfold like a novel as the series progresses.

TFA IS the flashy movie with no substance

A mary sue and token black dude who gets the sharp end of the stick isn't "heart"

It's just there for the sake of it being there. Jew Jew Abrahams admitted this himself in an interview. They thought more about the social context of the movie, than the actual characters and plot. Way to shit on the original trilogy. Make Luke out to be a cowarding hermit, Leia and Han to be terrible parents... All the while shitting on their whole victory over the big evil of the galaxy. Riding the coat-tails while simultaneously disgracing it at the same time.

Maybe you have written it somewhere else already considering you've actively made several post hating on TFA, but please explain again your review with context from the film.

I've seen this complaint many times, but it is no different from what Obi Wan and Yoda did.

Empire Strikes Back was virtually perfect. What would you change about it? Please elaborate. Maybe you'd take out the epic battle scene at the beginning? The meteor chase? The musical score that everyone remembers 35 years later and adores? :facepalm

I thought OT Star Wars was okay and this was okay. Never understood why it's a world changing franchise. The Disney-fication of this film was palpable. I thought Kylo Ren had so much promise, he might be my least favorite SW villain now.

From the perspective of someone who has never seen any of the first 6 movies and somehow knew virtually nothing about anything that happens in Star Wars coming into this movie other than like "Luke good, Darth bad"... so take this with a grain of salt.

I thought the movie was great from an action/cinematography standpoint. It was entertaining at points, even though I don't usually consider myself a fan of movies that are not rooted in reality.

As someone who has zero nostalgia factor whatsoever for SW, I'd have to agree with a lot of the criticism the movie has gotten. Of course it was going to be a box-office smash, of course fans were going to love it, of course part of the reason for the "thin characters and mediocre plot" was because they were laying down groundwork for future movies. But I don't think that fully excuses it.

There was nothing about this movie that screamed "greatness" to me. I know I'm missing a lot of context as I don't have the originals to refer back to like most do, but as a standalone movie it didn't really work for me. Absolutely nothing blows you away other than the cinematography, which is something that should almost be a given with a movie this high-budget.

I'd give it a 6/10. I'm definitely not a hater but I am slightly surprised that it's apparently so critically acclaimed. It wasn't awful but it sure as hell wasn't anything to write home about to me.

7/10 for me, and I'm a pretty big Star Wars fan. I'm gonna see it again, because the reviews are a lot more positive than my experience. My expectations entering the film were definitely inflated, but I left the show feeling underwhelmed.

General Grievous? Count Dooku? Prequel Anakin?
