They're very insecure about their own lives.

Same reason people get married or have kids or use social media.

What do you mean by that?
I love to watch my favorite players in my favorite sports (Lebron in bball...AP in football) play. So much that if I know Cleveland is playing at night i'll make sure to do any work or homework before the game starts so i can just chill and watch the game.
Is this living vicariously through Lebron? Or is there more to it (like following him on instagram or something).

That's still pretty big.
Now, if you had said a small Jordan then it would be a different story.

Why do people care about sports at all that they aren't taking part in? Why do we do anything except eat, drink, f#ck and work (so that we can eat, drink and f#ck)?
Life should only include real experiences and the goal should always be survival and/or reproduction. Everyone needs to throw their TVs and computers away.
What's the point of it all? Next time you're watching your favorite team, just keep in mind that we're all going to die one day... the players, fans, coaches... everyone. Dead.
Why bother? Why care?
Am I doing this right?

You could say that about anything, so why bother getting up in the morning? I suppose we could spend our time contemplating the vastness of the cosmos, or solving complex math equations. But we're still dead in the long run.
"I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind." Ecclesiastes 1:14
"In the long run, we are all dead." ~ John Maynard Keynes
"The purpose of life is to die." ~ Agent Smith
Imagine being born into a world where the fate of every living thing is to die and be forgotten. Makes you want to stay in the basement and post on ISH all day.

Our imagined self-importance is challenged by the vastness of the universe. We are too small. On the scale of worlds, humans are inconsequential. A thin veil of life on a solitary lump of rock and metal.

maybe the fact that we comprehend how insignificant we are makes us significant in a way. humans put shit in space. that's pretty cool. don't underrate humans

Basically, by "vicarous living," the OP means what I'd term as associative success—parading about their player succeeding as if the fan is using their favorite player as a proxy for their own success—"We won, LeBron/Kobe/Curry family!" for example. This is oftentimes done by fans to overcompensate, especially if they have a chip on their shoulder against factions of other players, especially due to self-insecurities.
You seem to be one of the more rational LeBron fans on this site, so this most likely is not aimed at you; rather, it is aimed at the more egoistic and arrogant stans who use their favorite players as a trump card on their resume, especially to attack others.
As for the question at hand: it's simply done to sensationalize one's own life, which is common to do when one is insecure and is mesmerized by this game.

Our self-awareness does, indeed, make us unique animals on this planet. However, with that self-awareness comes a stark reality... the inevitability of death.
I think OP needs to ponder these truths while he seeks for answers to his question... "Why care?"
It's a slippery slope that could lead him to the reality of his own mortality and the inevitability of our collective fragility, as a species.
...
Or, maybe just choose your favorite form of entertainment like the rest of us and shut up about it?

Do you know what living vicariously through others mean? I somehow think you are dodging the question. I didn't ask why are we fans of sports or why we have interests or why we go to work. I asked why do some people here live 'vicariously' through others hard work.
As we know some here don't do anything all day but sit in their rooms feigning accomplishments of their idols as their own personal accomplishments. They act is if they are 'better' and more accomplished as a human being because their team/player has more championships/mvps etc. I know your not stupid enough to not know what I am talking about e.g. people like stalker, kenneth etc What drives this? is it a loss of reality? fear and hopelessness creating a 'second' life? What can drive one to worship/follow/dedicate their entire lives to a sports player and derive ethics, morality, decision making, accomplishments based on the lives of a sports player who has nothing to do with them? How can someones complete identity as a human being be a kobe fan or lebron fan and nothing more? We are what we do so i find it hard to understand how can someones entire existence be focused on 'fanning or stanning' a player? I mean at the end of the day we all love sports thats why we are here but does my fav team or player affect my day to day happiness? No, I still go to work, I still hang out with friends, I still engage in my personal hobbies/interests and I still spend time with the people I like therefore no matter what happens in sports, it can not dictate who or what I do outside of it.

This bloke has the right idea. Who in the world judges the personality and lifestyle of someone else because of the team they like other then those that have only one thing in their life...their idols who they literally worship. I mean i bet even ISIS muslims spend less time praying and thinking about Allah compared to the kids/adults here think and follow their favourite players. Its a disease and I believe this site has cultivated and supported a sick part of society so make a few extra dollars. It is unethical, like giving a sick person with liver issues alcohol as the only thing to drink.
