Trail Blazers guard C.J. McCollum was forced to sit out the team's game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday because of a paperwork error made before tip off, according to Jason Quick of CSNNW. McCollum was noticeably absent from the opening player introductions despite being suited up and it turns out he won't be able to appear in the game at all.

McCollum cannot play against the Clippers because the Blazers failed to mark him as active on the roster prior to the game. According to Quick, the team went through its usual pregame routine with trainer Geoff Clark giving coach Terry Stotts a sheet with the team's roster for him to review. However, the sheet had Luis Montero, a rarely used forward, circled instead of McCollum, the team's former first-round pick and starting shooting guard. Stotts signed the roster sheet anyway without double-checking, leaving McCollum off the active roster.

Portland then realized its mistake and tried to change the roster by claiming the mistake was a "clerical error," but the teams weren't sure how to proceed and ultimately decided that no updates could be made. As a result, McCollum is officially inactive for the game and unable to play despite being healthy and ready to go.

We've heard a lot of reasons for players missing games, from injuries to suspensions to the classic DNP-old. However, I don't know if we've ever seen a DNP-paperwork before. Considering that beating the Clippers would be hard enough even with a complete roster, the Blazers have to be kicking themselves for being without one of the key players because of such a silly mistake.

Imagine that were a major game? Is there no room to just be cool and let them slide for common sense?

Can't set a precedent. Otherwise teams might try to do this when the game IS important in order to throw the other team's game planning off.

I imagine gamesmanship is decently easy to tell from....a role player with a similar name getting circled and the team noticing a moment too late. What...would you call a player inactive and then bring him back in if they let you?

That wouldnt alter the other teams gameplan. They assumed he was playing...and he did. Unless you mean they do it way in advance....then call it an error 10 minutes before tip.

I cant see that being a problem.

This just happens now and then. Happened to I think the Nets years ago with Jeff Mcginnis.

League source tells me the NBA gave Clippers coach Doc Rivers the option before tipoff to let CJ McCollum play Wednesday. Rivers said no.Beat Writer

Well if it came down to the coaches...ok. League did the right(ish) thing I guess. They were willing to work it out.

Appearently the Clippers and Doc fought to make sure CJ couldnt play tonight after noticing the error

This happened to the Clippers back in 2014 also so they wanted to take advantage of the situtation

even the Blazers staff and Coach dont know who that McCollum guy is, so why should the NBA change a rule for him? no one realized he isnt out there...

McCollum had been playing very well with Lillard out, Doc didn't want none.

After the final buzzer, as the teams separated to go to their respective locker rooms, Rivers gazed across the court, shrugged his shoulders and pointed at McCollum, flashing a large "I gotcha" smile.

McCollum caught Rivers' reaction and glared back, smirking. A little gamesmanship had set the table for a night he won't soon forget.

Doc.

O_O

No problem with this. "Gamesmanship" like someone said. Fans shouldn't be asking, "was this fair," but rather, "I hope the rematch is on national TV"

Michael Budenholzer and the Hawks wouldn't let this happen. Come to ATL, CJ.

Spurs have been fined for not playing their players, essentially given the reason that it is not fair to the fans. Yet when a player wants to play and there is an error, then the league is fine not letting fans see exciting players?

Word.

Teams just have to be more careful with the formalities. Clearly this doesn't happen that often.

Rules are rules. Do your paperwork right, and stuff like this won't happen. Portland has no one to blame but themselves.

Paperwork ain't shit in ball.

Fans paying 300 a seat to watch a game and you are going to take that from them because "paperwork"?'

Shame on the league. I have officiated 100s of games. If someone forgets to do something you just tell them to do it. You don't ask the opposing coach if they want to allow a good player to play. Thats just dumb.

That's how the real world works. If I go into a sales meeting, and my paperwork is wrong, guess what, I'm losing the sale. The details matter. The league has rules in place for a reason. This isn't some amateur league. This is a multi billion dollar organization. If you allow 1 team to bypass the rules, then you have to allow all teams to bypass the rules. And who's to say which rules must be followed and which can be broken. It's an awful precedent to set.

How many of those games have you officiated were professional, or even semi-pro leagues?

I've also officiated 100s of games, and seen players miss games for the stupidest reasons, but league rules were league rules. Can't bend them.

Either way, I highly doubt people were buying tickets to see CJ McCollum play.

CJ about to drop 50 including an ankle breaker on Austin Rivers the next times he meets up with the Clippers

It's sort of a complement that he was afraid to let CJ play but it's also kind of a bitch move by Doc Rivers. It was a way to get an easy win. I wouldn't call that being a good sport.

I used to like when players missed games on other teams so my team could get an easy win. I realized a few years ago how stupid that is. It doesn't make your team better to play a weaker team, and if you can't beat the other team at their best then your team isn't a serious contender.

I liked when the Blazers beat a Kobe and Shaq team because they were so good. Now beating the Lakers is a joke. I watch to see how many points Lillard is going to drop.
