View Full Version : Larry Nance JR has a 44 inch Vertical

AT HIS PRE-DRAFT workout with the Lakers, Nance Jr. kept jumping so high, team officials thought something was wrong.

On the first attempt to measure his vertical leap, in fact, Nance, in a stationary position, sprung skyward off two feet and cleared every bar all the way to the top of the Vertec measuring device. Then he says officials placed that device on a box, raising the entire apparatus about another foot off the ground. He took a running start and jumped off one foot.

"I cleared that, too," the 6-9 Nance said.

Officials were stunned by the implication that someone so tall could so easily jump well over 40 inches, which would be one of the highest verticals they had ever recorded, regardless of position.

The numbers Nance posted were so "abnormal," Lakers assistant athletic trainer Marco Nunez says, that they assumed they calibrated the device wrong for someone of his height, or had made some other mistake along the way.

"We must have written it down wrong," Lakers assistant coach Mark Madsen said at the time.

But there were other prospects to test, so team officials told Nance to complete his hour-and-a-half workout on the court, during which they double-checked the device and their figures.

"I realized, no, I did everything right," Nunez says.

After Nance's workout, officials tested him again, and again he soared.

"This is after an hour and a half of work," Scott says. "I was kind of sitting there with my mouth open. It's the first time I've seen somebody 6-8, 6-9 jump that high and was that athletic."

"He tested off the charts athletically," Kupchak says.

Officials averaged the results of all his jumps and declared, according to Nance, that his vertical leap that day measured 44 inches -- just shy of the Lakers' pre-draft workout record of 46, set by high-flying Minnesota Timberwolves guard Zach LaVine in 2014.

to put this into perspective. Russel Westbrook has an absolutely poverty max vert at 36.5 inches. People are fooled by his long arms and the illusion of him being some kinda big time dunker, so if you can imagine what a guy that is far taller with a far greater standing reach with a vert almost a foot higher, DAM this guy is gonna shut down ish.

Even beyond the old "standard vert vs. max vert" differentiation, some clinics and combines have different definitions of "max vert".

For instance, Larry Nance Jr. recorded a 37.5 inch max vert at the Draft Combine. When questioned about the discrepancy between that number and the recorded Lakers number, he said it was because the Draft Combine insisted he jump off two feet while the Lakers allowed him to power up and take off of one.

As such, there's a chance we can assume the same for Russell Westbrook. Of course, we'd also have to account for whether a player can jump off of one foot successfully as well. In Westbrook's case, particularly without a ball in his hands, I believe he's also an exceptional one-foot leaper and would probably exceed 36.5 inches off one foot.

Either way, the derivation in how people collect jumping data and place it into the same categories (some people place max vert numbers under the standard vert umbrella), makes it difficult to figure out who's doing what. Still, pretty pumped to see Nance Jr. carry on the freak gene.

9' standing reach, 7'2 wingspan, 37-44" vert. So why isn't he jumping the ball for LA?

Larry Nance, Senior was an incredible one foot jumper, he could get eye level to the rim as seen in dunk contests, and his baseline dunk over Kareem on old highlight videos. He was 6'10" IIRC, and easily as long armed as his son. So Jr. is following nicely in dad's footsteps. I think Nance, Sr. could also jump very well off one foot, but not quite as elite as off one. Nance was so athletic and had a smooth 18 foot and in jumper. His main problem, from an athletic standpoint, was a bit of a lack of lateral quickness and balance, even in taking consideration his height. Still, he was very, very good, and the son will have a tall order to turn out just as good as his father.

He played on the most incredible team to watch in college last year as far as in game dunking goes. He might have been the third best dunked on their team. YouTube dunk city USA Laramie Wyoming.

44 inch vert? Please.

Here's one of his "big" dunks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waBiLFY8_oE

He's 6'9 and his head's no where near rim-level.

He's the only player in the world that can jump up, put a quarter in the top of a backboard, and then jump up again and take it off.

His dunk in preseason is fantabulous. That legit qualifies as taking someones soul. All jump, no stiff arming (Blake Griffin) but pure verticality over his defender and smashing it in his face. Blake Griffin is a fraud dunker. Throws it in the rim, uses his offhand to gain momentum by using the defender. Pathetic.

Here's some REAL athleticism and vert:

Note the head gets above the rim...Nance Jr. can only dream of jumping like that.
