if a guy can get to the rim with ease no matter what. vs any defense and any pressure and any top notch defensive player at any time of the year in any pressure situation


then yeah i'd rather have the guy who can get 50%



the only problem is during the finals against the toughest defense a player is forced outside of their comfort zones and have to expand their game.

so when a player hasnt expanded their game in 12 years and settle for fall away midrange contested jumpers at 27%.. their 50% inside fg% rounds out to 35% overall because theyre shooting more shots theyre incapable of making than ones they are

and thus... costing their team the nba finals.

The only thing that generally matters is overall TS%.

Most of the top 10 ATG couldn't do shit outside of 5ft. Wilt, Kareem, Russell, Shaq, Duncan, Hakeem were all predominantly close-range big men. Are we going to mindlessly cite their ineptitudes from outside the paint as well? All that matters is that they shoot a high overall %. I don't give a shit if my guy shoots 0% from outside 5ft as long as he shoots 70% from the paint and takes more paint shots.

The one concession I make to this matter is that if a perimeter player does not make the defense respect and guard his 3, especially in this day and age, that makes the spacing a lot worse when his teammates have the ball. The defender can sag off. Fortunately for lebron, he has the ball so much that this doesn't really matter. His man can sag off but that doesn't affect the spacing of his teammates' offense, only Lebrons ability to drive to the basket.

Furthermore, the biggest increase in efficiency and overall overall offensive production results from taking more "smart shots", not getting better at "tough shots". For arguments sake, let's say lebron shoots 75% at the rim, which is very elite, and 25% outside the paint, which is very bad. Let's say he takes an equal mix of these, giving him a fg% of 50%. Now he can either spend a lot of effort to raise his outside shot from 25% to 40%, which is elite NBA territory and jordanesque, or he can shoot 2/3 of his shots at the rim and 1/3 of his shots outside at the same percentages.

Raising his perimeter shot from 25->40 gives him a fg% of 57.5%

Taking more shots at the rim gives him a fg% of 58.3%
