View Full Version : Wisconsin HS athletics bans... everything.
Wisconsin high school athletic officials merely listed a few chants they considered unsportsmanlike.
And then viral outrage overwhelmed them. State and local school officials were hit by a tirade of social media rants, angry e-mails and phone calls and a deluge of criticism from national sports reporters who couldn’t believe chants like “Air ball!” and “Sieve!” were being banned from the stands.
“I think people are just waiting for this to go away,” said Stan Diedrich, athletic director at Hilbert High School, a school of 130 students about 20 miles south of Green Bay. “It’s been made into a huge deal that it never should have been made into.”
It all began innocently enough when the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) sent an e-mail to its 500 member schools on Dec. 22 as a friendly reminder about sportsmanship. It said that in the fall there had been a “noticeable increase in the amount of chants” taunting opponents and their supporters.
“Any action directed at opposing teams or their spectators with the intent to taunt, disrespect, distract or entice an unsporting behavior in a response is not acceptable sportsmanship,” the e-mail said. “Student groups, school administrators and event managers should take immediate steps to correct this unsporting behavior.”
In Minnesota, schools in the State High School League follow guidelines set in a manual called “Be a Good Sport.” Specific chants aren’t listed. Instead, it states that unsportsmanlike behavior includes disrespectful or derogatory yells, chants, songs or gestures. Booing, heckling, taunting, name-calling, profanity also wouldn’t be sportsmanlike, it says.
Breeding a generation of losers.

yea thats pretty bad.....whats next? Are they going to make it mandatory to cheer when either team makes a basket? Cant even support your own team?
You can support your team, as long as you don't wave your hands to distract an opponent (listed above).

From the sound of it, nothing has changed and/or been banned. The crux of the debate seems to be an e-mail sent by the WIAA director of communications who suggested chants such as "Airball" are not acceptable.
However, the WIAA reiterated that nothing's changed with their rules — no new directives, no new rules, no new enforcement expectatations.
As a result, things are apparently still like they were before, complete with airball chants, "You can't do that" and the like.

Sounds more like the crowd was filled with a bunch of d bags. Nothing worse than going into a road game and having retarded ass adults scream hurtful and derogatory shit it at you all game. Most of the time it was personal shit too.
Nothing wrong here. You shouldnt try to bring kids down, maybe in college sports but not high school sports. I lived through this

Until you start an air-ball chant, and then you are removed for offensive taunting, and when you attempt to defend yourself, the administrators will say 'according to guidelines set forth by the WHSAA, you need to leave'.
They're not rules, they're guidelines. Until they are rules. Even Bilas was destroying them on Twitter.Yeah I mean, I guess "guidelines" always leave room for interpretation. So that could happen. But by and large, from what I've read, it's business as usual. People are still doing the airball chants and whatnot.
And to be real, the e-mail was a little vague and less direct than many are reporting, hence the retort of, "The intention of the message was misconstrued and morphed into something far beyond what it was and what it was intended for."
The actual e-mail basically re-affirmed that chants meant to taunt, disrespect, distract, or entice an unsporting behavior is not acceptable sportsmanship. The e-mail then says something like "Among the chants that have been heard at recent sporting events are..." and then it lists some things off without specifically saying they were banned phrases.
Here's what I've been able to find of the e-mail (NSFW - language): https://twitter.com/AprilGehl24/status/684025765642563584
If I had to guess, that director of communications has been put through the ringer by the WIAA for the manner with which he worded things.
It's an interesting thing for state athletic associations to handle, all told, because while the majority of fan bases remain pretty tame, the state still has to account for the very small minority who take a "USA" chant and turn it into a way of saying "U Suck Ass" (which has happened, as dumb as it sounds).
Moreover, some high school student sections have taken their cue from some of the more vile college student sections. Again, I tend to play it pretty loose in that regard (I was personally kind of flattered when an opposing student section knew me well enough to personalize their insults) but school systems kind of have a responsibility to ensure they're promoting acceptable behavior. It's a tough line upon which to balance.
