View Full Version : Does there come a point in age where you start caring about politics?

I notice all the old ****s seem to pay attention to politics and keep up on them, but I swear with each passing year I care less and less about politics in the US. The more dumb shit that happens politically with the medias help in motivating the masses just leads to the less involved I want to be in any political discussions and the less effort I want to put into any of it. To think, just muttering the words "hilary" or "trump" feel like a total waste of breath to me, just thinking about them or hot button social issues feels like I'm laying waste to my brain synapses yet there will be millions with great excitement over one of hilary, trump getting elected, additionally millions feeling patriotic, etc.
Old ****s on ISH, is there going to be an age where I will care about politics again? Or am I just permanently jaded?

Ole timers kill the booths because when you're old you don't work and your income comes from supplemental social security, retirement funds, veterans etc from the gov't. Which annually get raised and lowered each year by legislation (voters)

I'm not an old-timer, but I noticed that as I get older (compared to my past college student self), I just get better at filtering out all the crap in politics. To be fair, there seems to be a lot more of it today. But you eventually reach the point where you've read and experienced enough that you already know who you are going to vote for.
Most of what you see today shouldn't even be considered real politics. It's a circus- that's what it is. From the polls, debates, pandering, pc hot button issues, etc. It's easy to turn on the TV and watch all the charlatans go at it or the pundit who spoon feeds an opinion to the masses. A lot of people like when things are easy. It's a lot harder and more rewarding to pick up a book, learn history, speak to people who are affected by the issues and try to figure out what's really going on. I don't think I've ever felt jaded, and the end, I don't believe it's a waste of time. It's more like you just have to sift through the crap to find the stuff that really matters.

Younger people not caring about politics is problematic. You're so dependent on the government now, that who are you going to depend on when you're in your 50's and 60's when work becomes harder to come by?

I guess you have to define what "caring" is. Voting? Watching Fox News or MSNBC? Reading a news paper? Trolling on a message board? That's about as far as most people care.

I'm 27. I feel like the villain has won when it comes to politics. People like Trump and Hilary being taken seriously. The majority of people that I talk to are fine with throwing away civil liberties and individual rights. People are divided like crazy into Republican and Democrat, or Socialist which is even worse. Any time I get into a political conversation, I immediately regret it. Either it gets too intense or the other person is so ignorant that it reinforces my beliefs that the media/public school has successfully brainwashed 99% of the population.

I started at around 20. I hated political U.N. seminars in high school that often gave bucket loads of extra credit. I never enjoyed it personally but now that I know more about major issues in the world, I like debating my opinion. Some classes in college also required you to be on top of the news like business communications. Our professor would ask us every week what we read and you couldn't really make stuff up because he really knew his stuff.

When it starts to affect you. I ****ing hate politics and would like to avoid it but some of this stuff just impacts too much of my life. I know much more about it than I would have liked to. I refuse to waste time talking to people on the internet about it though.

You will care when it has a direct impact on you. At the very least you should pay attention to local politics as it will definitely have an immediate impact on you. If you travel a lot outside of the country then you'll definitely want to pay attention to foreign policy, especially regarding the area you are going into.

Yeah, it's right about the point where they become old and boring.
It's a governor's job to govern, and it's a citizen's job to do what he can, according to his station, to improve the society in which he lives.
Yammering back and forth about stuff you know nothing about does not factor into this. Yes you should vote. Yes you should think before you vote. But people talk about politics in this country the way they talk about sports: with bias, without wisdom, and because they like to talk. It's mostly fruitless.
It's also an entertainment industry. So if you want to know why Trump is at the top of the polls, well... a democracy gets the leadership it deserves.

So why is Hillary at the top then? Entertainment?
