In the picture below, weakside floor-spreaders (spacing) have drawn defenders away from the strongside.. If Noah doesn't leave #20 Mosgov and flood to the strongside, the strongside will only have 2 defenders on it.

Otoh, previous eras didn't have weakside floor-spreaders (spacing) drawing defenders away from the strongside, so the strongside was already flooded with all 5 defenders - there are already defenders standing where today's defender would flood to:

Defenders are either faced with making extra rotations due to spacing (today's game), or having less rotations due to no spacing.

Defensive rotations offset today's spacing, which is why league-wide offensive rating (the stat measuring how hard it is to score) has been stable for 30 years (all-time high in 2009).. ORtg has ranged between 105 and 108 since 1980, excluding a brief downswing from 1998-2004.. The minor shifts within that 105-108 range are due to style of play differences between the eras that affect inputs to the ORtg calculation, such as offensive rebounding rate and FT rate.

30 years of stable ORtg proves the difficulty of scoring hasn't changed, and the changes in offensive strategy (spacing) and defensive strategy (extra rotations) are offsetting - you either have extra rotations required by spacing and defensive 3 seconds (today's game), or the rotations aren't necessary because there is no spacing or defensive 3 seconds (previous eras).

I don't think u get it mane. Spacing is the way to go. 90s ball sucks ass with its boring ass players and games.

Right now is the pinnacle of basketball where teams are playing the best bball ever. Slash and kick with 3point shooting and quick transition offense is the way to go.
These so called spacing era teams would destroy teams of the past.

............................................Defens ive 3 Seconds

Notice how Duncan's defender (Pau) is reaching out and touching Duncan - Pau is making sure he remains within "armslength", as stipulated by the defensive 3 second rule.. He isn't allowed to wait under the rim, since that's 8 feet away from Duncan, and out of "armslength".. Since Pau must hug Duncan instead of waiting under the rim, Kawhi gets a wide open, uncontested dunk:

Here's another example - Maurice Speights must follow Tristan Thompson to the block to stay within "armslength", which prevents him from contesting Lebron at the rim - you can see how wide the paint is on this angle (16 feet wide).

https://media.giphy.com/media/qoijGMUGGV4dO/giphy.gif

But in previous eras, defenders were allowed to stand under the rim while their man was on the block because paint-camping was legal.. With defenders camping under the rim, Kawhi would NOT have gotten a wide open dunk in previous eras:

Btw, look how much defenders are sagging off their man - yet many ignoramuses think defenders in previous eras had to "follow" their man to the 3-point line - it's pure made-up lies from ignoramuses... Plain and simple... That myth is busted here (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=390392), where the rules of the game are explained.

It also makes today's perimeter players stronger, quicker and more versatile. Something Jordan never had to worry about.

Thanks for proving my point; the left side is clearly better.
To add on to that, not only are today's players better man-for-man, the league-wise athleticism of today's wing players are also far superior.

I put Lebron over Magic even though it isn't true - but today's dumb fan is so oblivious to the ceiling Lebron's ball-dominant style places on the team, so they'd never agree.... plus previous era wins regardless.

I left Payton and Westbrook blank - Payton/Durant would have far superior chemistry and defensive team - they'd own the WC... Westbrook's dumbass has yet to prove that he and Durant can win taking turns going 1-on-1 or pnr.

You're kidding right! That right hand column has the Holy Trinity of basketball players in Michael, Larry and Magic but 3ball left off his list Mark Aguirre and Bernard King, two absolute beasts in the 80's!!!

Players today may be more athletic but they are also a lot worst fundamentally, rawer and just not as smart as the guys from the 80's who spent 3 to 4 years in college!

To me Dwight Howard is the poster child for the modern NBA, an athletic freak of nature that hasn't even mastered the basic FUNDAMENTALS of scoring in the post. It's almost comical the way he handles himself in the post, he literally has NO IDEA what to do with the damn ball!

The 80's were so great, the NBA has altered it's rules ever since to try getting back the magic of that period, HASN'T HAPPENED!

And before I forget, WHERE ARE THE MODERN RIVALRIES!

Damn, there's a lot of gold in this post.. I'm amazed I left off King and Aguirre.. King > Pierce.. :confusedshrug:

But I dispute that today's players are more athletic - players don't get more athletic over a 10 or 20 year span - look at track and field - players need steroids to chop off 1 tenth of a second...... and many records have stood for decades..

If athleticism progressed that quickly (only 20-30 years from the 80's and 90's), then we should expect players to be dunking on 15 foot rims in short order - but that isn't the case.. Players aren't getting up any higher than Jordan, Nance, Nique or Kemp did, but players ARE allowed more liberties with the ball, which allows for more athletic plays.

Specifically, players are allowed better navigational efficiency (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=360900) - this consists of the legal gather dribble where players are allowed to take SEVERAL steps while picking up their dribble - this allows for better momentum as players approach the rim, and consequently more athletic plays (as shown in navigational efficiency thread).

That's precisely what I said and what 3ball responded to.

if you're going to go that route, why not mention the packed and brutal paint from the eighties and nineties that jordan tore apart? mj didn't excel on the perimeter only because of his athleticism, but because of his off the charts offensive iq. he would put these kids today to bed just drawing fouls.

i'm not supporting 3ball, but don't be naive.

WHERE ARE THE MODERN RIVALRIES!

They are absent in today's game making it a watered down, inferior product.
