most of these aren't even that impressive. it's basically saying he's the 'greatest laker ever' because he's played the most games with the franchise. magic has accomplished more in much less time.

Magic (Top 3-5 GOAT) > Kobe (Top 8-10 GOAT).

Magic as a Laker > Kobe as a Laker.

It's not rocket science.

If you rank Magic over Kobe in all-time list, you should rank as a Laker as well since both didn't play for a single different team.

1. Magic
2. Kobe
3. Kareem

Both got 5 but Magic was more of a centerpiece for his championships than Kobe was. Let's not forget Magic had to retire at age 31! just coming off an All-NBA First team selection, 2nd in MVP voting, and a Finals appearance. Who knows how many more accolades he could've added.

kennethgriffin
01-16-2016, 08:31 AM
then why is magic johnson always rated above him in all time lists

its obvious he had half the overall career and wasnt even 1/10th the defender or all around offensive player

it shouldnt even be close

the 80s lakers had no real centerpiece

they had 5 hall of famers at a time

nixon and cooper will make the HOF some day i think

Magic ran the team though and KAJ dropped off after 1980, he was an old man when Magic was at his peak winning titles/MVPs/Finals MVPs. Kobe had Shaq at his peak for some years so cmon man..

kareem dropped off from the greatest of all time to a regular hall of fame center

ok.. hes still a guy averaging 20.6 ppg from 1980-1989 with elite defense

and thats while having to share with 4 other hall of famers at a time. imagine if it was his own squad in the watered down 90s

and yes magic was the PG. but lets be serious

put any good point guard on the 80s lakers with kareem/nixon/cooper/worthy/mcadoo/wilkes and theyre gona win some titles

actually i have a good argument against anyone just being able to step in and average 25-30ppg as a 2nd option and win multiple titles that way

its extremely difficult to blend 2 guys like that in a positive way. everything has to be perfect

kobe complimented shaq. kobe was able to hold off his ego for long enough to get the job done as a 2 man team without needing any top dog credit

put lebron in that situation. see what happens

god knows iverson or jordan would have ****ed it up

shaq wanted to be the man and take all the credit when another guy averaged 29/7/6 in a 15-1 playoff run

and he actually told kobe to his face... "you cant win without me"

so yeah. its a little rare. considering kobe and shaq are the only guys to do it

Magic's longevity is underrated. No, he doesn't come close to Kareem, Karl Malone, Duncan, but it was a'ight. It wasn't anything like Showtime, but at the age of 36, after not playing for four years (and having to deal with players not wanting him to play because of the HIV virus), he still put up 15/6/7, playing more as a forward rather than at point guard. He had even developed a decent outside shot.

By the way, in his first game back he pulled out this on Sprewell, not the worst defender out there:

Yeah... Kobe is the second-greatest Laker of all-time since he spent his whole career there. Of course he isn't better than Shaq or Kareem as individual players, but strictly talking greatest Laker ever he has them both beat.

Kobe is obviously the greatest Laker of all time and the 2nd best player of all time.

It's laughable when people rank Magic ahead of Kobe, considering they played for the same franchise and Kobe is the best player in the history of that franchise.

Kobe has played 20 seasons with LA, which has to account for something.

If you include West, the GM, then he would move to as high as 1.

Magic and Kobe are 1.A and 1.B. I give Kobe the slight edge over Magic as the greatest Laker.

HOoopCityJones
01-16-2016, 06:07 PM
I think this can't be understated.

The fact of the matter is Magic contracted the HIV virus, thus cutting his career short, just like Kobe was accused of rape and that was a distraction in the 04 season and destroyed an already tender relationship between he and Shaq.

Kobe's longevity shouldn't be dismissed just because Magic could've had a longer career, he didn't and some of Kobe's strengths are Magic's weaknesses and vice versa. I'm not saying it's a wash and depending on the day i'd say Magic is greatest myself. But it's closer than people think.

Like I mentioned before, Magic's last season (sans 95-96) in '91 he made the all-nba first team and was only 31 years old. You don't think he would not have made 2 more first teams at age 32 and 33? Which are still elite years for many alltime greats.

At age 31:

Kobe - 5 championships, 2 FMVPs, 1 MVP, 8 all nba first teams, 12 all nba teams total, 12 all star teams, top 5 in MVP voting 8x, top 3 in MVP voting 5x

Magic - 5 championships, 3 FMVPs, 3 MVPs, 9 all nba first teams, 10 all nba teams total, 12 all star teams, top 5 in MVP voting 9x, top 3 in MVP voting 9x

Duh. Kobe's long career helped him get more of those accolades but in terms of leading LA, gotta go with Magic. And yeah it is closer than most people think but it still is clearly Magic.
