View Full Version : "Master of all trades", how skilled are you?

Anyone here familiar and or trained/experienced in more than one trade, if not all?

Electrician
Plumbing
Mechanic
Welding
Computer programming/Software programming
Engineer
Etc.

What are you skilled at?
What is your favorite out of all the trades, and least liked?
How did you come about it, and how did you further learn?
Any courses you've taken or did you self learn?
Any certificates/licenses?
What do YOU believe is the hardest trade?

I'm sure we have very talented, strong men here. I'm looking to self educate myself on electrician, plumbing, mechanic, welding, computer programming/software programming. I've done civil engineering as a concrete batcher, and adapted doing quality control on concrete with both slump and air tests. My father is a mechanic (specialized in diesel). I have uncles that are specialized in welding, plumbing and electrician.

I found myself more intrigued as I got older. I was around welding at my last job and found a liking to it.

This year I'm looking to start coding, from the very basics.

I'd definitely like to learn some more construction trades. I can do basic maintenance on my cars(oil, brakes, belts, changed suspension components before, did some gaskets, changed a transmission with my cousin).

Eventually I'd like to own a home and in anticipation of being ready, I would like to be able to fix my own home.

It's not that hard bro. Just takes common sense and being able to follow directions. And for most vehicles, there are enthusiast forums that have many DIY guides that will show you how to change/repair many components.

The internet has truly become a game changer.

Does the DIY guides have to be specific to car brands and models? Or is it universal?

It's mostly specific but I'd say generally speaking, these skills translate to other types of vehicles.

I mostly owned japanese vehicles so I knew right away to bust out my 8,10 and 12mm sockets/wrenches since japanese manufacturers typically used to sizes for their bolts.

True story. A few days ago, (2014 Audi Q7) a message appeared for a uninflated REAR-Right tire.

I go to fill air in on the right side passenger tire

Shit baffled me, because the alert didn't go away. I'm like fck. So I went, and filled the opposite tire thinking perhaps in some geographical locations rear right might be flip considering you're looking from the head of the vehicle.

Turns out, I had to reset the tire pressure :pimp:

whenever i need to fix shit at home, the first thing i do is look up youtube to see if there's a video on it. a lot of home-improvement stuff aren't hard to learn, but you still need someone to show you the way first if you've never done any of it before, and youtube is pretty good with providing lessons for simple to moderate shit for free. it saves money, but the biggest reward is probably knowing that you DIY, and it's fun unless it's a laborious task.

I can do basic household electronics, sockets and data-cabling and such - though i'd struggle to kit out a whole house. The things you don't do you just forget.

Dropped out of school for a year @ 16 (don't think that's allowed anymore in the UK), and did about 6 months as an apprentice electrician, but fook me was it long days, hard work, and worn knees - took me straight back to school :lol.
