Arenas is one of the all time great success stories. 2nd round pick with $100 million contract. Not sure anyone else ever did that.

McGrady's career is a letdown, not just because his prime was so short, but because he never had a decent team around him in his prime. He is known, rightfully so, for having the worst supporting cast of all time of a player of his caliber. Look at the rosters. And he still almost took down a number 1 seed with one of those teams.
In Houston he had the team, but he was never healthy, and Yao's career was cut short too.
Rose is also disappointing. I'm a big fan of his still, but it's clear he's a different and inferior player.
Gilbert Arenas? Who really cares?

Gilbert Arenas? Who really cares?
Arenas was 29/6/5 on 58% TS at 24 years old on a playoff team and hit the most game winning shots of any player from 2005-2007, he had the 2nd highest +- in the league in 07, made All-NBA 2nd team, and peaked with 13.1 WS. Just a hint, his best year was actually better than Derick Rose's MVP year...better then Carmelo's best year...better then Paul Pierce's best year..better than Vince Carter's best year...he peaked higher then most of the 2nd tier players who have a shot at the Hall of Fame. It's not hard to imagine that he would be fighting for the scoring title every year and making All-NBA teams every year if Gerald Wallace doesn't fall on his knee when he was 25 years old.

TMac and its not close. Hes far more talented than Rose and Arenas were combined.
Honestly based on pure talent TMac is like one of the 5 or so most talented players ive ever seen in the NBA. He shouldve been far, far, faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar greater than he was

Every ounce?
6 year $111m contract he:
went from a 30ppg player to 13ppg in a couple years
struggled with knee problems
set a franchise record for most turnovers in a game (12)
brought guns to the locker room
was suspended by the NBA for 50 games
faked injury in a preseason game
was traded to Orlando where he averaged a mere 8 PPG.
Retired at 30!

Tmac was super talented, but I didn't see that fire...that will to win no matter the cost. He seemed to lack that extra gear.
All time great in terms of talent, though.

He got hurt. Before that he got the most of his talent. Can't fault someone for getting hurt.

T-Mac in terms of pure talent
Arenas and Dairy Crows in terms of how they squandered what they did have

T-Mac.
He never got out of the 1st round, but he posted 29.5/6.9/6.5 in the playoffs with Orlando and Houston.
If Grant Hill stayed healthy, they might've been an all-time great duo.

Started career with Carter, went to Orlando with Grant Hill, then to the rockets with ming.
The amount of bad luck in the above is beyond words insane. It doesn't seem possible.

Just a note on this thread, although these guys were ravaged by injuries that took down their careers, they all peaked high which means at a certain point they were doing what they could to be great. And none of them are going to be forgotten. So I don't consider any of these guys epic failures or anything. Rose had the shortest time as a star so you feel for him more. T-Mac was a perennial All-Star for years and can easily make the Hall of Fame.
T-mac maybe should have been an all-time great, but he wasn't Darious miles or Greg Oden, he peaked at 32/6/6 on great efficiency, what more did you want from him? I agree he should of had more team success, but generally speaking, his peak is celebrated and he will be remembered forever.

It would have been interesting seeing Carter and Mcgrady together at least till around 2007, along with quality role players. Might have at least made the early 2000's a bit more interesting with the Nets and Pistons battling over the conference title. From what I recall, Tmac didn't want to be under Carter's shadow, but when he signed on with Orlando it wasn't to be lead-dog, but to be Grant Hill's running mate who was at the peak of his powers before the ankle injuries. And then, there was talk of Duncan potentially going there at the same time?

Worse, Out of his 12 seasons played, only 4 seasons he played in 50+ more games.
