After the third quarter, the players were on the bench and the coaches went out and huddled on the court. Phil asked me to go ask Kobe if he wanted to stay in the game and try to get 70 and then come out. So I went up to Kobe and said, "Hey, Coach wants to know if you want to stay in for the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, get 70 and then come out." He looked up at the scoreboard, and he said, "Nah, I'll get it another time." I looked at him and I kind of got mad. I said: "What?! You have a chance to get 70 points. How many people can say they scored 70 points? Just stay in the first few minutes and get another eight points, get 70 and then come out of the game." He said: "I'll do it when we really need it. I'll get it when it really matters."
The next month he went on to score 81 against the Raptors :applause:
Charlie Villanueva's thoughts on the game
What’s so ironic is that — as late as the third quarter — we were genuinely thinking to ourselves that we’d executed a really good plan. That’s something a lot of people tend to forget about that night: that we were winning — pretty comfortably, and pretty deep into the game. Kobe had 26 at halftime … and we were up by 14. This is great, we were thinking. You never want to give up 50, of course. But if that’s what it was going to take to beat this particular team on this particular night, then 50 was fine by us

Wow.....this is crazy. The fact that he had the opportunity to score 80+points twice in one season.

Charlie is an idiot. Letting one of the best one on one players ISO every play on you isn't a good plan. It's a moronic plan.
Jalen Rose probably said it best: "We're idiots."... Charlie being the biggest one.

He could've easily had two 80+ point games.

kobe also had 56 through 3 quarters vs the grizzlies
no doubt he coulda scored 24 in the 4th quarter had he wanted to
hes dropped 30 in a quarter like 3-4 times

Phil Jackson: It's not exactly the way you want to have a team win a game, but when you have to win a game, it's great to have that weapon to be able to do it. I've seen some remarkable games, but I've never seen anything like that before.
The guy that coached prime Jordan said this.

How many ATG superstars are gonna have that mentality and say that kind of stuff in that situation? I can only think of Magic, Bird, MJ outside of the MAMBA. Certainly not Wilt and LBJ.

On February 18, 1985, Bird registered a triple double (30 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists) and also had 9 steals in three quarters of play against the Utah Jazz. Bird sat out the fourth quarter, as the Celtics led 90–66 after the third quarter and won the game 110–94. When asked by reporters if he actually wanted to play in the 4th quarter to get the quadruple double, Bird said “What for? I already did enough damage to them.”
