To be fair, American democracy isn't really interested in an educated populace either. And the Education system operates more like a trade school than a think tank.

My dad taught me chess when I was a little kid, to have somebody to play against, I thank him every day for that. Chess gives you the think a few moves ahead mentality which is crucial in life.
