Physical characteristics
The Barbary Lion is often referred to as the largest and heaviest subspecies of Lion. It weighed between 190 - 299kg for males and 150 - 190kg for females. Male Barbary lions were around 2.7 to 3.4 metres (8 ft 10 in to 11 ft 2 in) in length and females were around 2.1 to 2.7 metres (6 ft 10 in to 8 ft 10 in) in length. This animal was heavily built, with a slightly stream-lined look. The mane extended right down across the belly and groin.

Environment
Unlike the plain-dwelling Lions today, the Barbary Lion lived in a mountainous range called the Atlas Mountains of North Africa. It shared it's habitat with animals such as the Atlas Bear and Barbary Leopard. It lived near groups of people, which regrettably, became a factor of their extinction in the wild, people killing the Lions for attacking cattle and other domestic produce.

The prey for the Barbary lion were mainly Barbary Sheep (Ammotragus lervia), Wild Boar (Sus scrofa), Cuvier's Gazelles (Gazella cuvieri) and Barbary Stag (Cervus elaphus barbarus), but also Arab herds of Cows and Sheep, and even sometimes Horses.

The method of hunting was never documented, but it is believed that they used the same death by strangulation method as do the other Big Cats of the World.

It was likely the top predator in the Atlas Mountains, competing with the Atlas Bear and the Barbary Leopard.

Classification
P.Leo Leo was a subspecies of Lion, as demonstrated by the Panthera Leo in the name. It's name means, in plain English, "Big Cat, Lion, Lion." It was considered to be the most ferocious Lion. The Lion is sometimes called Felis Leo and Panthera Leo Berberisca.

History and distribution
The Barbary Lion is famous for being in the Colosseum fights in the Roman times. The animal was captured to near extinction. The Barbary Lion lives in North Africa, specifically the Atlas Mountains.

I always thought extinct meant that there is none left in the world, however apparently this one is still alive in Algeria.

Lions don't seem real. They look mythical or fictional. If people weren't so used to them and someone described it, you'd put it up there with a unicorn
