View Full Version : How does Tyronn Lue get to coach the East, but Luke Walton doesn't coach the West ?

Lue goes 2-1 as a replacement, while Walton leads the Warriors to the best start in NBA history but doesn't get the spot ? Even if it's just as an assistant, he should be there.
Also, Kyrie Irving probably goes from not starting the ASG from not being there altogether over his new coach too.
It's such a weird scenario.

Walton isn't a head coach. He's an assistant coach.

I get that it's the supposed reasoning.
Walton coached these guys for a huge portion of the season to the best start ever but can't coach the team off a bullshit technicality.
Not saying Pop is even wrong to head coach it, but Walton should be there. The guy earned it. Way more than anyone who had to step in.

I can already see the puppet lue giving a lot of playtime to kyrie or lbj, so one of those get the MVP...
.. jokes pop is gonna murder him, no way a puppet coached eastern team is gonna win the asg lol - which sucks, coming from a toronto fan :(

Don't know if the coaches will give Kyrie the vote. He hasn't played enough games (ironic since Lue has only coached 3).
Besides, it's an ASG. East vs West will come down to the wire (usually) with all that talent out there.

All coaches do in all-star games is rotations. LeBron getting another all-star MVP while Pop does the smart thing and rests his players.

i know im gonna get negged but i have to say it. its racism
you let a black coach who hasnt done jack sh*t coach the all star game but a white guy has coached a team to the best start in nba history and he doesnt get to coach at the all star game?
It kills me how much privilege black players and coaches get in the nba. We dont see this in any other sports besides the NBA and im f*cking sick of it.

Eh, don't think it's a race thing.
Dwane Casey would be in line next for coaching the East if were going by records. And obviously Pop would get it after the insane start by the Spurs too.

The Warriors' coaching staff coached last year's All-Star game, so I guess by rule they can't do it this year.

Is Pop not white?
The rule is the Coach of the team in the lead gets to go. Not how many games they personally won. Tyron Lue is the Coach he gets to go. (Steve Kerr is the Coach he gets to go. Kerr did it last year so Popovich gets to go)
Rules are rules. They should be allowed to be broken though

I wonder why Lue doesn't decline it and let whoever is #2 coach the all-star team.

This. There is no conspiracy. There is no controversy. It's just the coach who is coaching the best team at that moment. Period

Well, I didn't really want to make it as something controversial. It's just comes off as funny when you think about it.

The "Riley Rule" stipulates coaches cannot coach an All-Star team in consecutive seasons

Have people forgotten the rules here? The Warriors had the best record at the All-Star Break last year. Kerr was the coach. Becuase of that, the Warriors' coaches cannot represent the year after (that's why despite being 2nd in the conference Pop is coaching it this season).
The Hawks had the best record at the All-Star Break last year. Bud was the coach. And because of that, the Cavs are eligible to represent the East this year.
Has nothing to do with Walton or Lue.

LOL what?:oldlol: Reaching bruh.
Adam Silver explained this really well tho'. He said that everybody in the league knows that coaching is the effort of the entire staff.
And since Blatt was the only one that left, there is no reason to punish the rest of the staff.
