It's not a stupid move for them, Russell's picked up his play but he still doesn't look like the guy to build a future around so why not phone around and see if any one is looking to shake things up and wants to bring in some youth. A package around Russell is their most valuable package right now and every GM worth his job will be at least calling around to see what's on offer come deadline.

It's L.A, if Kobe retires and they bring in an all star level guy (hey even a near all star level guy will probably become an all star in L.A with their fanbase) they will be able to attract other free agents to put around that guy whereas Russell is going to take a few years to come along and may never be a guy who attracts others. If true it's not as if it's a case where they will be looking to unload him ASAP.

The rest of it though, look at how much centers are being paid nowadays. And no, centers aren't being paid for free throw percentage. Rebounding and team defense is important. DJ's man on man defense needs work (he fouls a lot) but his team defense is great and he isn't a black hole on offense so the team flows better.
