View Full Version : Too much freedom at my job.

I have too much freedom at my current job and I'm starting to feel bad about taking advantage of the position/company.

Anyone else have this issue? :confusedshrug:

I am getting paid for 40 hours a week but I'm probably only working for 15-20 hours. There is no supervision and I am allowed to leave my office whenever I want to go to "meetings" with the families/clients I work with.

I come home everyday around 12 to walk my dog. Then I make eggs and watch something on Netflix for about an hour. Then I head to work and "get back to it".

Part of me feels like I'm lucky but there's another part that's starting to feel guilty.

Keep taking advantage you *****. The whole hierarchy is about taking advantage of others. Just make sure no one can slander or call you out about this.

Yeah man for real...corporate higher ups take advantage of all their workers. So if the tables are flipped for once, why not take advantage

LMAO. Yes. At my last job, I was the production monitor. I monitored everything being made from the push break operator, to the welding, to the tube cutting, to woodshop, etc.

I had the plant managers office, at the time he got fired. I would be in his office with my own computer just sitting there BORED ASF. The window, everyone walks pass and they can't see INSIDE where I'm sitting, but I can see outside LOL. So with the manager fired, the workers were unsupervised. The VP, to whom I reported too, he would walk around and I'd sit there looking OUT the window for HOURS and whenever he'd come I'd walk outside or pretend like I'm doing shit.

I literally would finish my work every 10 minutes of every 2-3 hours and kick my legs up. LMFAO. I would get sleepy.

I deadass made 10 grand for free.

Edit: Here's a pic of me just CHILLING FAM.

Don't feel guilty, but also don't count on ever moving up the ladder.

The only downside, I didn't have service UNLESS I left the office and went to certain areas of the factory. It was all metal basically. So I'd sit there with NOTHING to do, the computers would be keylogged so I couldn't browse the internet. One time I almost dosed off. Man I had it so good.

use the free time to work on your skill set.

be thankful for this easy period, but don't squander it. that should help deal with the guilt issue.

I'm not sure if they track our internet activity at work but I definitely waste a lot of time browsing the internet. They also gave me a brand new iphone 6 with a huge data plan that I use as my work and my personal cell phone.

A lot of the work I do can be completed rather quickly but it "could" take longer. So for the most part I complete the work I need to and just say it took longer than it really did. I meet with my supervisor every week and I make sure I can give her some meaningful updates but I'm definitely taking it super easy.

My schedule is supposed to be from 8:30 to 4:30.

There's been days where I've slept in till 10, show up at work around 11, stay at work for 2-3 hours and then head home. It is possible for us to do a lot of our work from home so I'll bring my laptop with me with the intention of doing something at home but I usually never take it out of the carrying case.

Shouldn't be about your supervisors... should be about your pride and self-esteem.

If being good at your job doesn't give you pride, then it might be a good idea to find something else that does (even if it's more challenging than slacking off).

Your own guilty feeling is the worst aspect of the situation, not what others might think.

Once you go back to having to work hard for the whole shift every week you'll be all out of wack. Enjoy it now because you're gonna feel the consequences of taking it easy.
Absolutely true, from personal experience.

Just say you're working remotely. Big deal. Don't completely not work, but don't kill yourself either.

This seems to be the case with more and more people, so many of my friends do this and get to sleep in if the night before they got super hammered, they just do the work once they wake up and that's that. I like the sound of that

That is exactly why you're still job-level and not career.

Eh, who gives a ****. Once you become career you're essentially a slave to the corporation logging in 50 hours a week and depressed your sitting in front of a computer all day. And for what? So you get more money? So you can brag about how busy you are? About the status of being a more glorified pencil pusher?

You can never win in the corporate model as there's always going to be one person up from you. You're a clog in the machine for better or worst.

To the OP I know it may have a profound effect on you that you serve no purpose for the corporation and you don't produce anything of value but you have two options. One you either leave and find a position to "push" yourself. Or you can stay at your current job, know that you serve no purpose but you can do w/e the **** you want.

If I was you I'd pursue my hobbies at work like doing a side business, learning languages, blogging(if you're into that shit). I'd also take extremely long lunch breaks and leave early every day.

This is exactly what I would do if I had that chance. Try to do a startup or something. Try to solve a problem someone or something you had in your workplace and make a business out of it. Ive read of a lot of start-up that started with simplistic or stupid ideas and flourished in the end. Just dont waste that time playing video games and netflix.

Then don't take advantage? I don't really see that. Employers know their employees take time off during work but not like 20 hours a week.

Sounds a typical public sector worker to me. Don't be ashamed OP.

Corporate model works if you know how to play the game.

I used to work in an environment that had some freedom and it took a lot of brainstorming, etc. Took awhile to get a hang of.

Where I work now, it's a mix of both- some freedom in terms of brainstorming but all of the tasks have certain goals that should be met over a long period of time (few months at least).

One thing I've been doing lately to hide my lack of doing work:

I try to be the last one in the office. Most people in my office work 8-4 and I make sure I stay till at least 4:15. This way it looks like I'm plugging away late in the day.

I usually come in around 10-11am so I kind of have to do this or they might get suspicious.

I once worked 9 months as a driver for the hospital as a side job, was driving around samples from the hospitals to the labs etc. I always came in late and said "damn traffic i always have to work longer". Meanwhile i've been driving home playing videogames or doing other work.

Nobody ever knew what was going on, i could have done the same work in 3 hours but got paid 6-7 hours. :lol They paid me per hour.
