Kyrie is leading the NBA in midrange shooting efficiency by a large margin, in an era of advanced statistics which encourages the 3 point shot Kyrie is making the midrange game relevant again.

Kyrie is shooting 57.1% from 10-16 and 52.1% from 16-23

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/i/irvinky01.html

Compare that to Stephen Curry.

Curry is shooting 49.0% from 10-16 and 48.8% from 16-23

http://www.basketball-reference.com//players/c/curryst01.html

Kevin Durant and CP3 have the most volume on the best efficiency. So you could argue them over Kyrie.

52.1% mid-range is insane. Thats close to peak Dirk (albeit on less points).

2011:

According to NBA.com's StatsCube, LeBron made 45 percent of his midrange jumpers this season, which is an incredibly efficient mark for a high-usage perimeter player. Paul Pierce made 44 percent of his midrange jumpers. Kobe Bryant made 42 percent. Derrick Rose made 40 percent. Dwyane Wade, 40 percent. Kevin Durant, 42 percent. Carmelo Anthony, 42 percent.

Ray Allen shot 46 percent, barely edging out LeBron.

Statistically speaking, out of all the high-usage perimeter players in the league, LeBron was the best midrange shooter not named Dirk Nowitzki (Dirk shot 53 percent -- he's a freak).

2011:

Lebron had two immense shooter seasons from midrange in Miami, he needs to get more left elbow touch's, he's absolutely devastating from there.

Dirk is one of the greatest if not the greatest midrange shooter of all-time.

Okay? Its not just percentages

Look at the volume of shots, defensive attention faced, and amount of shots off the dribble

Take these all into account, and LeBron is a hair better than Kyrie

And I'm a Kyrie fan

KD has the most volume and efficiency is quite close, so you're probably right.

KD and CP3 are leading in volume, i'll post the stats in a little while.

Kyrie positions his body and feet straight toward the basket when he shoots. Most players angle their body and feet.

His crossovers give him so much space + him being a great shooter = money

He has always had that midrange game in his skillset, but I never thought he utilized it as completely as he could... until this year. It has been devastating to opponents and he is able to create so much space with his handle and teams have to respect his three-point stroke and ability to get to the basket... you have to give him something.

And now that he is hitting it at this rate -- and it looks completely sustainable -- he will be that much more difficult to stop. Bigs are going to have to start rotating out further which will give him clear paths to the basket.

As Kyrie has gotten healthier, he is playing some of the best basketball of his career.

Kyrie Irving's last 5 games - 28.2 points, 6.6 assists, 133.0 ORTG, 29.8 PER, TS .660

KD is the best mid-range shooter in the league because he can get the shot whenever he wants or shoot it over anyone.

great offensive player, terrible defensive player so he leaves just an average impact on the game. he would never lead a team to the playoffs. he needs to be the sidekick on a good team. just last week Norris Cole and Jeremy Lin destroyed him.

Kyrie is having an excellent season shooting from mid-range. I mean that % is pretty unbelievable. I wonder if it's trending upward as he's been getting more reps or he's consistently shot at that level this season. Will be interesting to see how he does the rest of the year.

I haven't checked KD's #s yet but I looked at CP3's- he's shooting 51% from 10-16 feet. One thing to note though is that CP3 has more attempts in this range than Kyie has from 10-16 and 16-23 ft combined. So a pretty big sample size actually.

Did you see his efficiency numbers I posted over his last five games?

28.2 points
57.1% FG, 85% FT, 41.4% 3PT
6.6 assists
1.8 turnovers
133.0 ORTG
29.8 PER
.660 TS

He was really good the first few games after he came back from the injury, and then he had about a 10 game stretch where the consistency wasn't there. You could see that he was getting his legs back. Since then, coinciding when the Cavs kicked up the tempo, he has been just killing it.

I haven't watched the last 5 Cavs games- is he taking a healthy amount of mid range still, or is mostly taking it to the rack & launching from distance? Super specific I know lol, just was wondering.
