Charles Barkley: "There's five real jobs in the world: teacher, fireman, policeman, doctor, and somebody who's in the armed services. Those are five real jobs."

I would add electrician and plumber too.

Those are the jobs that matter.

How about builder? How about designer?

How about long haul trucker? Quality control specialist?

Yeah, those don't make the soundbite as cuddly sounding. Gonna have to exclude those from the real jobs list.

Reality has to be cuddly.

Also, how could he leave out the world's oldest profession!?

I mean, just things necessary to exist?

I'm an artist, you won't convince me that "art" doesnt matter. Fck we doing here if we can't express ourselves? Just here to eat? Even those in poverty need some art in their lives...hell even cavemen had art.

Who the **** cares what Charles Barkley says? Do you not understand how stupid and pointless that statement is?

Lawyers and judges are two additional real jobs. And research scientists and engineers.

This is why Barkley gets paid, to make ridiculous comments.

Although i could see Trump saying something similar. "I will abolish all jobs except teacher and police man, everyone else is fired. "

We need more context. Is he saying those are the 5 jobs that actually produce something of value?

Is he saying that automation/technology has eliminated most of the real jobs and as a result we have shifted the workforce into other fields that are intangible and don't produce anything like your typical office job? But I doubt this is what Barkley intended on saying.

i would take anything Barkley says with a grain of salt. He never won anything. My favorite Barkley story is MJ telling Pippen, Barkley is lazy and doesn't take winning seriously when he signed with the Rockets. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sHFwKV6H1tY/VRN7wycbEYI/AAAAAAAALkg/ILzhredlj7s/s1600/4vCzng1.gif

what a dumb sentiment. every job that pays money is valuable to a functioning society. Literally, every job, even a mcdonalds job. If it wernt valuable then why the fucc would they get paid for doing it?

some jobs are a luxury. i had this talk with a friend the other day who's an italian teacher, if suddenly there were no italian teachers the world would just keep rolling on.

Barkley just blurts things without much thought.

I saw him on a panel with other NBA players honoring Black History Month. He stated that "Every time you see a Black man on tv, he's portraying a robber, murderer, or pimp".

WTF. Are we still in the 70s?

well, programmer, obviously

a lot of things that "teacher, fireman, policeman, doctor, and somebody who's in the armed services" are doing, will be done by machines sooner than later

I've said this many times....everyone needs.....

A lawyer....to get you out of a jam.

A doctor...if you're sick or ill...he is your guy.

An accountant....everyone pays taxes and they can help.

Everyone should have all 3 of these and I am positive they do.

and whos to say that luxury isnt as important factor as health? why does everybody think health should be put on a pedestal? people everyday make the conscious decision to eat unhealthy food knowing it is bad for their health. Theyve decided the luxury of good food is worth bad health. :confusedshrug:
Yes we are all afraid of dying, but we are also afraid of living boring and unfulfilling lives that would come with not having people do jobs outside of the ones deemed "prestigious" and "honorable". if it wernt for jobs in computer science, how terrible would the world be? chefs? engineers? creators? list goes on and on. all jobs are valuable. we need them to live "good" lives.

:oldlol:

Barkley is such a retard: man basically names and lists a bunch of jobs that are not particularly essential, and almost all creations of the modern world (at least as proper and paid professions), and yet he forgets the most fundamental job of all: the person who produces or acquires the food to be put in his fat belly.

Not to mention that doctors would still be applying leeches without the researchers and scientists who discovered more effective methods of treatment--doctors are actually largely superfluous, which is why they were held in contempt for so long (until recently); most recent medical advances have been a result of technological improvement; the biggest difference between the doctor and the witch doctor is simply the people behind them/ the authority they rely upon.

Construction worker. Teacher is hardly a real job unless your teaching someone something usefull. How to read, how to perform open heart surgery. Too many useless mandatory classes in education

Hooker.

Real estate agent. Home inspector.

It would be easier to list non real jobs

But without them, the world goes on.

Without police, teachers, fireman... our society crumbles.

I love Chuck but wow

The closest thing to a "fake job" would be entertainers such as athletes, actors, comedians etc

Barkley is so ignorant about how the world works and it is just in line with his supposed basketball observations.

Just shut the **** up already.

IIRC he said it on Jimmy Fallon on being asked how he's doing. Said that he can't complain because he made millions playing a game. Then went on to say that there are only 5 real jobs, teachers, farmers, policemen, doctors and people in the armed services, and that everyone else should STFU and enjoy life.
