Think of this when talking about the electoral college. We are getting closer every election to having legit 3rd party candidates. Then after that who knows, maybe 4-5 parties that all have strong support. So then their primaries are going to be with about 20% of the population so to win the primary you may only need to get 5% of the population. Just look at the dem/rep now, we could have Sanders vs Trump, both somewhat extreme cases and that type of thing could only get much worse. So in years to come when some candidate is elected by a much smaller segment of the country, they could end up being very extreme and we will be thankful the electoral college is there to save us from that.
