Investigators are looking into whether the machete-wielding man who slashed four people in a Columbus, Ohio, restaurant attacked the eatery in the mistaken belief that the owner was Jewish, sources told NBC News on Friday.
The owner, Hany Baransi, is actually an Arab Christian from Haifa, Israel, his daughter said.
The attacker — identified by several NBC News law enforcement sources as Mohamed Barry — had asked a worker at the Nazareth Restaurant and Deli where the owner was from, investigators said.
“Obviously we were targeted because there’s a whole bunch of businesses around here,” Baransi told the Columbus Dispatch. “I’m the only foreigner.”
The suspect walked into the restaurant and argued with an employee before leaving, returning with the machete a short time later and attacking customers, police said. CBS News was first to identify the attacker as a Somali man named Mohammad Barry. “He came to each table and just started hitting them,” one of the diners, Karen Bass, told CBS News. “There was a man on the floor bleeding, there was blood on the floor. It was awful. It was just carnage.” Originally, Mohammad had asked for the owner, but when he wasn’t available, he decided to hack the patrons instead. The attacker may have traveled to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates in 2012, CBS reported, citing federal law enforcement officials. This whole incident is hardly surprising as Columbus is a favored spot to dump Somali refugees. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened before. If you dig a bit, you may just find an ISIS connection as well. Police say they are looking for a motive, but they already know what it is. I’m just glad they dispatched the guy to Hell where he belongs.
