Why would you travel all the way from Auckland to visit such a shithole?

Only a glutton for punishment gets an Escalade. They are by far the most broken in to cars out there.

You can get a full size economy car for about $200 a week. If you want to get a luxury SUV you're looking at $500+ a week.

It's actually very expensive for someone outside of the country to rent a car as insurance is required. I think it ends up being near 700-900/month for a car.

this. and if youre road tripping through California, you definitely dont need an F150. this isnt mexico or arizona, where you and your buddies can ride in the truck bed. plus, gas prices fluctuate all the time here. the better the MPG, the better your trip will be
I actually just came back from a trip in Cali and the areas and we hired a car from midway car rentals whilst we were there. To give you the details, I researched on most of the rental places around LA and found midway was decently priced amongst all the other big brands and seem to have good customer ratings. It was ones that were near the airport too with free shuttle to their car park. We initially hired a mid sized suv (Jeep) as we have four people traveling together and wanted a bit of space + luggage space, when we got there they offered an upgrade to a Ford explorer brand new 2016 model for like $10 extra per day and obviously we took the upgrade. Its defs the big black SUV look that you would want, super spacious, high tech and intimidating + free onboard gps(ours broke so we just some other ones for free). We hired the car for like 6 days and it cost us like a bit less than 700, but we had two under 25 drivers so that set us back like 140 so its really 560. Im not sure but if you hire it for the full week you might get discounts.
P.S. traveling in LA, a car is a must.

Is OP touring the city of Los Angeles or the state of California?
If it's just the city have an Uber driver take him wherever and do what tourists do: Walk around in awe and take multiple picture.
If you're touring then you'll be doing more walking than driving.
He said he's driving to san diego and vegas didn't he?

Yeah Auckland sucks, and Australia is far better.
There's only two redeeming qualities to Los Angeles-weather and beaches, and both are far better in Australia.
And I am telling you this as someone who lived in Los Angeles for 27 years.

Only people not from California refer to it as 'Cali'.

Are you an Uber driver, do you have three choices of gum in your back seat, and play bad music?
