I'm aware that there is more of a sense of camaraderie in the NBA than most professional sports leagues, but unless they are his friends or family, it's kind of odd. Seriously, he's just a basketball player.

LeBron was gonna bring some, he got the hook up. Still no word on why he flaked.

Well they obviously are his friends, but they also have the unique perspective of being NBA contemporaries. I thought it was pretty cool, and it's good to see greatness be recognized and appreciated by greatness.

How is it obvious that they are his friends?

Honestly, why would this happen to Kobe Bryant, and not to other players who retire? Do you think Chris Andersen will be "showered with gifts" upon retirement? It's weird.

There's nothing weird about it. Those guys competed against Kobe, won multiple gold medals with him and were inspired by him growing up so they wanted to show him their appreciation for what he's meant to the game and to them personally.

CP3, Wade, Melo were also part of the olympic team. They spent lots of time together and had a great bond.

Not surprised you didnt know about bonding, cuz what is a friend when you're always in the basement

The first bolded part is stupid. The second bolded part is a good point.

Anyhow, this thread is rather blasphemous.

I'm not sure why the comment about him being a legend is stupid. As is the case with just about anything in life, the better you are at something and the higher your status, the more praise and recognition you get.

I do agree though that their Olympic experience together was probably the main factor in this instance. By all accounts the 2008 "Redeem Team" in particular was a very close group.

Kobe said it isn't about the rings, but about the journey...

Which player has had the best journey? That is how I base my all time rankings now.
