From the other story I read she started her trip in Italy and went through the Balkans and was killed in turkey. Supposedly she was pretty experienced in hitchhiking but I think she underestimated what real "patriarchal" societies are like ie Turkey. I have been in Instanbul before and even for a "liberal" city I wouldn't recommend any female to walk alone during the day alone at night.
