View Full Version : GOP Bill Aims To Ban Food Stamps For Steak And Lobster In New York
Anyone have a legitimate reason why this shouldn't be a law. I've said this same thing for years....
If you are going to be given free money for food, given how fat our country is already, you at least need to be eating healthy foods. Not to mention, parents on food stamps will inevitably set the example of healthy eating habits for their children, who hopefully will carry on those habits throughout life.
I think this is a win/win for everyone. There's no logical reason it wouldn't pass except that its a GOP bill and Democrats are voting on it... Amazingly, NYC was able to litigate how big your soda can be, so I would think this should pass with ease, right?

Meh. If the taxpayer is paying for your food and paying for your health care, you can't complain about them "regulating" what you can eat. Beggars can't be choosers. You want to eat what you want? Spend your own money.

I can see lobster and candybars, but steak? Unless it's filet mignon or some Japanese rib eye type sh!t, I think it's a bad idea. A pound of rib eye or NY cut, runs about $8-$12, about the same as a fast food meal but healthier. I didn't read the whole article, maybe it has a cap of $20/pound or something similar but on it's face this seems like a bad idea to include steak and I imagine it will face stiff opposition from many other GOP members.

Why should people on food stamps get to eat luxury steak dinners, when people who work actual jobs on minimum wage can't?
All that does is incentivize people to go on food stamps rather than get jobs.

OP spends post whining about Dems who are living rent free then posts excerpt from article where the bulk of the quotes are O'Bama supporting similar legislation. That moron is shook to the core.
Anyway, lobster and candy OK, but steak is some of the cheapest and leanest food you can buy.

A $10 pound steak isn't exactly a luxury. Look at the protein per dollar ratio, and compare it to other cheaper staples first. If it is, you are on the road to banning things like mangoes, avocados and certain juices from being bought with EBT.
Don't get me wrong. I think the whole food stamp program has been ridiculously changed around. Supposedly 1 in 6 children were going home hungry every night which is absolute BS. I'm just questioning why steak is being singled out.

To many people working minimum wage it is. You are speaking from a position of wealth. Check your class privilege.

Whatever. The rule should be "eat healthy or pay for your own health care". You want free food and health care? There's gotta be some strings attached.

De-incentivizing people on food stamps is a decent way to try to motivate people on welfare to get jobs.
oh the horror

As Reggie said I don't know how "privileged" steak is but the cost of lobster is pretty damn high. What else should people eat that's healthy? Generally I pair steak up with veggies on occasion. I mean I'm not chowing down steaks every night by any means but to outright ban it with food stamps?
Then again on the other hand, when you're getting free vouchers for food you eat whatever they tell your ass to eat. Don't like it? Then work and move up to eat whatever you'd like. There SHOULD be limitations to what one can get with food stamps. And sure as HELL shouldn't be getting candy.
oh the horror

I agree with this. Food stamps should be essential survival food meant as a temporary solution for someone that is having a hard time. Not a permanent means to eat whatever you want.

I don't even see it as a luxury, I see it as a health issue.
If someone is paying for your food AND your healthcare, then they should be allowed to regulate one in order to afford paying for the other.

More important than the health of our society? Isn't rising health care costs a concern?
I think it is. What better way to cut down the healthcare spending then by having people change their diets? Instead of having 40 million people eating cookies, we'd now have 40 million people eating fruit and vegetables.
You disagree with that idea?

This has nothing to do with health. If it was about health they would be going after things like potato chips, frozen fried crap, anything with partially hydrogenated fats.... in the grand scheme of things you find at your local grocery store, lobster and steak are relatively healthy.
What this is really about is stoking the fire between the low iq whites that make up the gop base and poor minorities. Politicians are trying to rile you up and you eat that shit up- "whadya mean these minorities are buying fancy steak and lobster with their benefits while I have to eat hamburger helper, it's not fayur dey took mah jerb"
When Michelle Obama tried to make school lunches healthier you people treated her like she was hitler. Don't pretend that this is about health because is not.

There is no root cause. Different people are poor for different reasons. It's not a one size fits all.

They are. Obama is doing the same thing. Steak was brought up because it's expensive, AND not all that healthy.
Basically, they made it a political piece so people like you would think they're going after the poor. But Obama can do the same thing (read the article) and it's no big deal cause he has a (D) next to his name.

This right here is why government always ends up failing. Can never manage different people/reasons correctly.
Anyways, I dont think asking people on foodstamps to eat healthy foods is unreasonable.

You better be ready to fork over some serious tax dollars if you want to enforce that.
Fun fact: Lobster was a peasant meal only the poor used to eat. Now, it's considered an expensive dish for the upper class or wealthy.
