So I just had a look at the standings and was expecting to see the same result as the past few seasons. I'm now seeing that 0.500 record sees you just below 8th seed in the east, however in the west a 0.500 record has your team just inside 8th place.

I remember doing this same exercise for the past few seasons and seeing 0.500 being 3rd-5th seed in the east and around 10th seed in the west.

Interesting.

Probably top to bottom. I'd argue they are worse, tho, because at least Atlanta was good enough to be paper tigers and the Bulls maybe (but not really) might contend. Even there so-called up and comers in the Bucks and Wiz are doing poorly. Now it's really a one team conference and there can't even be an argument made for any others. They do have the best coach in the NBA, so I give them that.

The West is extremely top heavy at the moment. The East has a lot of parity by comparison though.

The West had 3 teams with 40 wins at the all star break

The east finally got one team with 40 wins like 2 days ago

Their bottom feeders are better, but they are actually worse on top. Hawks, Bulls, and Pacers are worse than they used to be, and they were the teams that were threats to LeBron's teams in the recent past.

The top 3 west teams, especially the Warriors are just taking away wins from the weaker ones. The west itself is still better than the east overall.
