Just started watching Chopped and Master Chef, and think they're awesome. It's kinda weird because I'm a picky eater and wouldn't eat 75% of the things they make but it still interests me.
Anybody into the food shows?

Those aren't even cooking shows, more like reality shows, can't stand them personally.
Now a cooking show where person actually teaches you how to cook something you can make at home, I can watch them all day.

I'll watch for a few minutes when flipping the channel, but then I lose interest. My wife is a big fan of My Kitchen Rules.

All the time. I watch a lot of the competition shows and then I record Bobby Flay's Barbecue Addiction as I'm always looking for new ideas in that regard.

Clicked on the thread thinking you meant real cooking shows, not dumbass reality shows.
I love all the PBS cooking shows. Specifically, Pepin, Nick Stellino, Ciao Italia, Lidia's Kitchen, America's Test Kitchen, Rick Bayless, and that Irish guy.
Bobby Flay, but Food Network always has him doing dumb shit like baking apple pies with some grandma in a competition. They need to bring back Boy Meets Grill and Hot Off The Grill.

He's had 20 shows. Most of the time FN has him in some stupid competition with viewers.
Dumbass.

i was reading a thread about the worst PR nightmares and an episode of kitchen nightmares was prominently mentioned. i'm watching it now:

Amy's Baking Company - Kitchen Nightmares - Full Episode (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uPOGxUtZvk)
this was apparently the first (and maybe only) episode in which ramsay walked away and said "i can't help you." what i don't really understand is why as a business you would remotely want to allow this incredibly unprofessional representation of your restaurant.
i mean, the cringey interactions between owners and customers were horrendous on their own, but by forcing ramsay to walk, you're basically saying "we learned nothing from all this and will remain a shitty restaurant." why they would not be on their very best behavior is totally beyond me.
according to WP and sources, the drama was actually real:

flupping unbelievable.

Yeah this episode was pure cringe. Not surprised though, it was in Scottsdale, aka gold digger capital of the US. Bunch of uptight twats in that city. Trust me, I live in Phoenix.

Textbook example of NPD, both the husband and the wife. Narcissicists are incredibly sensitive to criticism. The wife was worse. And the husband enabled her by not telling her the truth. She wanted the prestige and respect of being a well-regarded chef, but she didn't want to go through the learning process of learning how to run a restaurant and cook under pressure for many people. They probably needed more cooks for a space that size.
Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultraconfidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism.
They did a followup episode.

I love how clean and organized her kitchen was and how lousy her food is. Also when a celebrity or a critic comes to your restaurant, it's standard practice to make their plates perfect.

I actually liked Emeril back in the day. The dude actually cooked food that people actually ate. I still watch Chopped, Iron Chef, America's Test Kitchen and Hell's Kitchen. I used to watch Giada but I never learned anything because all I would do was stare at her tits.

Back when Food Network started, I was in college, and watched a ton of it. It's still a channel that my fingers punch in when I'm numbly drifting through the channels after work. It's not as good as it used to be, but I still enjoy Cutthroat Kitchen
The travelogue stuff, Anthony Bordain, Man vs. Food, Diners Drive Ins and Dives, Food Paradise, I like all of. However how much one considers each of them a cooking show I suppose is up to interpretation.
The Cooking Channel has more of the classic instructional cooking shows. Talk about timeless programming. They have a nearly infinite amount of content, and could probably never pay to record anything ever again.
Secret Meat Business, which was on the AWE network, was a killer cooking show. Australian chef Adrian Richardson was the star, with his killer chimnied roasting oven, that guy loves meat.

A restaurant opened on my block and we went the first night. We were joined by a guy whose expertise was opening restaurants he bought us a round of drinks and gave a free appetizer he wanted us to try. It was a very cool move and created a nice sense of hospitality. The owners stood in corner glaring at us. They fired the guy that night. and had a very uncomfortable restaurant that closed within months.

Listening to this at work. Jesus that woman is nuts.
If you want a great book on a narcissistic nightmare, read this.
http://www.ttbook.org/sites/default/files/public/images/detail/Son%20of%20A%20Grifter.JPG
It's about a conwoman and her son who killed an old woman and stole her $7 million townhouse from an rich old woman in NYC. It's written by her other son who basically escaped her.
At one point this son moved him and his family to a new state without telling her. A week later she rang his doorbell.

i still have about 20min to watch, but that was pretty much my takeaway. she wanted to take a bunch of shortcuts, and as a well-off contractor, he was willing to bankroll her little game of playing 'restaurant' for a bunch of clueless patrons. how this place lasted even a couple months is really something.
at the same time, a couple things ramsay did so far seem pretty unproductive. critiquing at the table is fine, but doing it in the kitchen in the middle of meal prep is about the worst way to go IMO. also, him going back out front and announcing to all patrons that the ravioli was a fraud might have been deserved for the restaurant, but very awkward if you're sitting there eating. not to mention, setting the tone for a bunch of discontent that followed.
OTOH i suppose this is all part of the shit show of reality TV, and you'd think these two rocket surgeons would have known how it was going to be. apparently both of them are ex convicts, FWTW.

if running a restaurant is hard enough as it is, i can only imagine doing it in NYC.
so the cantina nearby was sold to new owners fall of last year. they started with a manager who doubled as the best mixologist i'd ever seen. he also created custom stuff like fruit-infused tequilas, and was a big guy who could handle the occasional drunken oaf. and even just margaritas-- he could make dozens of varieties that were all incredible delicious, some of them using tricks i'd never seen before, like instant-infusions made by igniting lavender and lemon oil. i thought he added a lot class and distinction to the place.
so a month ago they fired him, apparently because he didn't work at the frenetic pace they wanted him to.
