Not really surprising to be honest. There are a handful of players who are better in ISO situations, and it doesn't help that LeBron's jumper has never been a strong suite in his game.

In 5 seconds or less, you are essentially in a catch and shoot situation. Not LeBron's game, to say the least. His numbers, obviously, are a lot better once you lengthen the shot clock a little more. Pretty much any late-game metric has LeBron as one of the great late-game players of all time. And there's also this

Top 10 teams in clutch per 100 possessions since 1997

2009 Cavaliers: +39.9
2013 Heat: +33.7
2011 Mavericks: +29.5
2007 Mavericks: +29.0
2006 Clippers: +27.1
2010 Cavaliers: +26.4
1998 Lakers: +26.2
1999 Magic: +25.7
2008 Cavaliers: +24.2
2004 Pacers: +23.4

I think they're switching to Curry though but he is an actual ATG. Came in completely unheralded from Davidson and took over as the best player in the NBA during the media/Nike driven "chosen one's" prime.

Whereas in reality he's 2/6 and only won 2 times.

Note that this is regular season only. He's 4-12 in the playoffs in the past 10 seasons.

This also excludes the first 3 years of his career, in which he was 4-14 in these situations (and 1-2 in the playoffs). That "10 seasons" was chosen very intentionally to make this look worse.

The NBA as a whole is 51-250 on shots in this situation this season (20.4%). In LeBron's career he's 14.8% in the regular season and 35.7% in the playoffs, 18.7% combined.

If we're willing to expand our scope a bit beyond just taking a shot under 5 seconds, here are LeBron's stats per 48 clutch minutes (under 5 mins to go, game within 5 points) from 82games.com:

Season Pts Rebs Ass TS%
08-09 55.3 14.9 12.6 .692
09-10 66.1 15.9 8.3 .629
10-11 45.1 11.2 4.9 .601
11-12 33.2 15.1 9.3 .502
12-13 38.7 15.2 14.9 .554
13-14 42.8 9.8 5.4 .633
14-15 51.5 8.3 7.4 .587

And note that clutch time is when offensive efficiency goes down. The fact that LeBron can put up these numbers year in and year out in clutch time is staggering. Check those links: every year, not only is he a top scorer, he's one of the top guys on the list in rebounds, assists, and shooting efficiency.

The first couple seasons on the list, from his first Cleveland stint, average to more than 60-15-10 per 48 clutch minutes on .660 TS%. Think about that for a second. That's like Wilt Chamberlain combined with Oscar Robertson, except at today's pace instead of the inflated pace of 50 years ago, at super-efficient rates. There's probably no known precedent for that level of dominance.

Sure, extrapolating a 5 minutes sample will give some great background to a players stats, especially when the performance is fluctuating within those minutes aswell.

Not saying Lebron is bad, good or great just those stats aren't worthwile discussing imo. I wouldn't give the ball into Lebrons hands for the last shot no matter what, neither would I do with most star players.

5 seconds is enough to create a dribble pull up. Consistant shooting isn't Lebron's thing. His motions tend to vary and he often shoots off-balance shots leaning his legs forward. Of course he won't be as good as someone who squares up on set shots and even on pull up jumpers. Look at the great shooters, even the non catch and shoot one's the always try to stop the foward motion the moment they rise up and stay mostly vertical on there shots so the don't alter the distance to the basket between rising and beying on the apex of the jump. Those faux fade aways alot of players do are way harder to hit.

Not ignoring. No Kobe fan, No Lebron fan, No Jordan fan. I've got no horse in this race so: Clutch is just stupid. These situations are pretty rare and seldomly decide a whole series. Last year's Lebron-shot vs the Bulls was a decisive one, he doesn't hit that the Bulls need to take 1 of 3 games.

The one against Orlando back in '09? Cosmetics, nothing else.

I completely agree. Whole clutch thing is stupid or atleast less important than specific fanbase made it out to be on here.

It all started around 11' when Lebron had a series where he missed some gamewinners and Kobe had a series where he hit some gamewinners. And of course Kobe fans started to talk like that clutch scenario is all that matters in basketball and that clutch shit got overblown to the moon. Of course they were doing that only so that they could say Kobe>Lebron because they had nothing else to hold on to. Then that picture showing Lebron's, Jordan's and Kobe's gamewinners came out and it showed that Kobe is by far the worst of the three and then that clutch thing slowly started to fade out for some time. Now they are on the Curry/Durant(whoever plays the best that year, both great long range shooters with many gamewinners) bandwagoon and it became alive again :oldlol:

Highly misleading...in this situation, about half of these shots are three point attempts when down by three points.

So they are highly contested three point shots.

Lebron's not a good three point shooter, we already knew this. So you're taking the stats of his worst ability, i can do the same for any GOAT.

League average would be around 22% for these shots (2's and 3's combined).

What is Curry's rate on this?

Just wondering, because a lot of people don't even think about the situation and just assume that a good FG% on these shots would be 50% and anything below 40% is terrible.

When in reality, many of these shots are desperation three pointers when down by 3 and the defense expects a three...which is damn near impossible to make.

And so the league average on such shots (2 pointer and 3 pointers combined, to tie or take lead, with less than 24 seconds left in the game) is around 25%.

If Curry's is anything above 35%, i'd be impressed.
