View Full Version : People getting upset by Steph Curry getting compared to all-time greats...
You do realize that people are comparing peaks, right? Nobody is making the argument that he has the accolades and awards to compete with top rankings, but are talking about peak performance. Thus saying "he can't be top because he doesn't have enough rings" is irrelevant to the discussion. Just thought I would clear this up.

Difference between better and greater.
Curry shits on Magic as a basketball player but no way in hell is he GREATER than Magic, who won Finals MVP as a rook among other great shit he accomplished.

Well ESPN put Lebron as 3rd all time with only 2 rings, I guess some people don't care about rings.

he's having 2 great OFFENSIVE years thus far - this cannot be denied. I would say those who are "getting upset" are actually taking into consideration the other side of the ball -- defense.
he's not close to reaching the level of offense and defense guys have had like MJ, Wilt, TD, Shaq, Lebron, Bryant, even Garnett to name a few on their given MVP (peak) years. he's dominating one side of the ball, and his team is masking any defensive liability he's had/is.
is that a big deal - no - he's doing incredible things and making some very entertaining games to which any fan can enjoy. but the comparison is far off IMO when comparing overall peak - now if you want to do offensive, he's still not better than MJ, dominance of Shaq, to name just a couple.

im not gonna say curry shits on magic.....magic had the rare gift of making anybody he played with better...theres only a few players in the history of the game that actually made everybody better...and magic is one of those guys.....you take magic off those lakers teams and they don't win shit in the 80s......the only reason they got back to the finas in 91 was because of him. His offense isn't on currys level but his IQ was off the charts and is the greatest laker and forever will be the greatest laker and its not even close.

well just that someone can be a good player and then suddenly burst into having the possibility of being top ten, has that ever happened? All of the top 10 guys were superstars from day 1.
That's why people are hyping him, I think, the fact that someone can literally shoot themselves into the top 10 is amazing. If he keeps playing like he is now and wins some more rings, you can't really keep him out.

The thing is defense at the guard position and even the wings arent as important as defense in the paint. All of the top 10-20 GOAT big men were defensive anchors, except maybe Karl Malone. On the other hand, except for MJ, every other GOAT guard/wing had suspect defense/defensive consistency issues.
Magic, Bird, Big O, Kobe, West. None of them known for their defense.

What defensive liabilities/deficiencies? He is a PG that guards PG's well. He guards SG's pretty well too.
People need to let go of this myth that he is a bad defender.
15th in defensive win shares.
2nd on his team in defensive win shares only to Draymond.
2nd in steals in the league.
3rd in defensive rebounds amongst PG's.
A positive on the defensive end in terms of +/-.
All these stats are just an accident though.

Great offensive player, not a great two way player. He does deserve the hype though - so many amazing performances this season. Was in the bar the other night watching the Spurs shit on the Rockets then someone switched the channel over to the Warriors/OKC just in time to see Curry finish em off ... thought the damn building was gonna come apart when he hit that three ...

Aside from threes/long range, what does he do better than Magic?

Even if he doesn't win the chip this year, the warriors will be back next year right back in it. If they stay relatively healthy, they ain't going anywhere for a while ...
